"Slowly boiling a frog" is a much used metaphor for humanity's apathy towards sustainability challenges.
But it may not be so slow for much longer 😓

People argued for a long time that an energy transition to renewables reduces dependencies and exposure to geopolitical risks.
It's like a doctor arguing substance abuse reduces life expectancy.
True, but not as effective as one might think. Addiction is not rational. Instant gratification rules.
The Web (which incidentally makes Bluesky possible) was famously invented at CERN by Tim Berners-Lee, but I've always suspected some mysterious particle collision was involved 🤓

There is an illusion of intelligence that we (as humans) are apparently quite eager to project. Eliza was like orders upon orders of magnitude simpler than LLM's but had the effect already.
A major risk of the digital era that we haven't really internalized yet.

Does this mean Europe securing IEA' funding now that the US is abdicating any link to reality (and its own responsibility for climate change)? 🤔
That would be good news🖖

also how desolate this entire area...
A centuries-long global addiction to fossil fuels has certainly not turned the desert into a paradise, neither figuratively, nor literally 😔
Is focusing on #sustainablefinance a viable educational path at this moment? How about when combined with geopolitical risk? 🤣🌱
Interesting question / discussion over at the sustainableFinance forum www.reddit.com/r/sustainabl...
"the majority of what is built today is repetition of code that has already been done"
This the absolute crux of the matter imho. Together with open source becoming the norm the potential to compose rather than rewrite is obvious.
LLM's as just an expensive and clumsy way to tap that potential?
If you really want to create a stampede you need to try this trick that bluesky did a while ago, sharing a "I am proud eurosky user serial number 2356" post 🤣.
Or maybe have the various clients show eurosky accounts with an "EU domiciled" flag 🇪🇺.
Only half joking 😃
Also a nice metaphor for the entire world, which is now busy dismantling the (already limited) role of the United Nations, even while the global stresses of sustainability require the exact opposite.
Hopefully the EU invents the musical score that shows a different predicament is possible.
1. New paper out in the Journal of Development Economics! With Mariana Bernad and @juanpablorud.bsky.social we ask: do banks' voluntary climate pledges actually mean anything? Using survey data on 337 banks and ~5,000 firms across 33 emerging economies, we find that they do.🧵

Bad #riskmanagement feeds on itself. When the proverbial hits the fan one must fire-fight one crisis after the other, with little chance for structural change
Good risk management means thinking forward (mid and long-term), *as well* as managing the short term
Simple truth, but not a lived reality
The migration was without any hickup (including the bridging to mastodon) but the instructions could guide non-technical people. From memory two attention points:
- manage expectations about the time it takes (i.e., not instant 😅)
- make it more clear that the clients people use remain the same
Hi from #eurosky
Sometimes #riskmanagement is a difficult art and science. It involves tracing hidden causalities in complex systems. Decision making in the presence unknown unknowns. Rocket science stuff 🚀
But a lot of times its just Homo Sapiens being an idiot 🤦

inane financial systems, promoting and habituating people into dehumanizing behaviors. And instead of thinking and acting with urgency to transition to more sane alternatives, a collective torpor, pretending that specific past inventions and conventions are there only possible universe.
The idea that the world's information organisation can be outsourced to an advertising monopoly is so ludicrous you'd think somebody has lost their marbles.
Yet this is the world we live in. Literally. Somehow we need to re-establish a link with sanity. It might make a lot more things easier 🥶
Do you know if the bridge to mastodon would keep working after migration? Not a big deal, can try setting it up again if it doesn't (somehow not working great after my domain verification anyway), but curious and maybe others wonder about this.
When it comes to materializing European #digitalsovereignty its good to keep in mind that influential "European" voices (no need to name names, find for yourself) are in the payroll of #bigtech
Oligopoly and #surveillancecapitalism can easily afford this spend

Is that the strange square island between Cyprus and Certe?
this is huge! it's a big lift just to do the backfill indexing, but even more to get it operational and chase down all the little product affordances.

“Just because you are outside of your home doesn’t mean you have consented to having a random bozo collect your face and your name, the latter of which can enable them to search for your digital presence or even home address. The act of existing in public should not carry those risks.”
Running out of excuses now to migrate mine too 😅
An important data point will be them proving there is a viable low end market for open source phones. Remember this? 🤣😍

These are good first steps but not quite liberation yet. Substantial dependence on Google both direct (services) and indirect (as identity provider, the underlying android project etc). Also these devices tend to be upmarket.
Still longing for my cheapo Firefox OS device 😅
