Day 8(?) of the @smokelong.bsky.social #ArchiveChallenge, I'm delving through the @splitlipthemag.bsky.social archives, starting with this gem from @gaylebrandeis.bsky.social

Love the tone of voice in this one, the use of humour to start things off:

What to Say (and Not to Say) to Someone Grieving a Suicide (Published 2019) Suicide can leave the survivors with anger, confusion and guilt, and even well-intentioned words can cause pain.

A suicide loss survivor is not alone, even though it may feel that way when one is grieving. Some pearls of wisdom from @gaylebrandeis.bsky.social on #WorldSuicidePreventionDay.

Fascism thrives on fear and exhaustion. Reclaiming joy, laughter, and leisure (as one is able, of course) is an act of resistance.

A Trump-Musk memo telling US government employees to hide whatโ€™s happening from the public is a sign that:

1) Public legitimacy is a constraint for them, they know it, and will at times alter their behavior accordingly

2) Reporters should focus on it, revealing more of what theyโ€™re trying to hide

They slipped anti-fascist poems into the pockets of soldiers. They wrote fake letters in German, urging new recruits to desert. They stole propaganda posters and cut them up into resistance flyers, which they hid inside cigarette boxes and left around town for soldiers to find.

The Indigenous People of North America have decided to go back to calling the Gulf of Mexico, โ€œChalchiuhtlicueyecatlโ€. It is what the Nahuatl People originally called it as it is the domain of the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue, who is assoc w/water bodies, including the Gulf of Mexico.

โ€œThings donโ€™t always change for the better, but they change, and we can play a role in that change if we act. Which is where hope comes in, and memory, the collective memory we call history.โ€ - Rebecca Solnit, HOPE IN THE DARK

Walking in to NASAโ€™s JPL today as a woman in science leadership felt almost like a protest. They can take us off the webpages and the walls, but we will still be here, absolutely crushing it, and supporting our community while we do it.

Happy International Day of Women in Science, everyone.

Nobody wants an emergency, but perhaps we should want some of the remarkable things that can happen during them. On the top of my list of those things is how in the immediate aftermath of a hurricane, a fire, an earthquake,ย ย people take care of each other and work together without the kind of vetting and fretting whether they agree entirely about politics or religion or other matters. We are in an unprecedented emergency in the United States with fallout that poses threats to environments, economies, human rights and even survival beyond our borders, and we could use some of that energy. As political scientist Erica Chenoweth said in Saturday'sย Meditations in an Emergencyย interview, "Theย best studyย on the subject in my opinion suggests that in the long term, institutions really canโ€™t save us; that civil society and mass mobilization are a more potent check on a backsliding democracy in the long term than relying on institutional checks and balances alone."ย
Right now the courts are doing important business as they render verdict after verdict against Trump and Musk thanks to lawsuits brought by states, federal employees, and others with standing. Some of the Democrats in office are being amazing, and others in the opposition party are being waffles, milquetoasts, cookies that crumble, and otherย ย refined-carbohydrate items. As is now clear, the administrative branch of the federal government of the United States is engaging in a coup attempt against the legislative and judicial branches, against the law and constitution itself, and against your rights and mine and the security and stability of the world. They can be defeated and at a minimum held in check, and the sooner they are the more limited the damage. But as Chenoweth points out, it's up to us. Are we up to it?

In this emergency, I think it likely that we are going to need to pitch a very big tent and invite everyone in who doesn't want to live in a dictatorship... www.meditationsinanemergency.com/big-tents-an...

It's so important to do what @tupelopress.bsky.social is doing here. At Literary Mama, we're not going to compromise on these values, either. As Tupelo Press puts it (in alt text as well), "compliance with the new regulations would be immoral."
