Sharing experiences and representation of disability and chronic illness across the Star Wars fandom and universe. By Greg Norman (@raelshark.bsky.social) and Jack Vasvary. https://resiliencesquadron.com
Yep.
Many non-disabled reporters do not find it important to talk to actually disabled/chronically ill people, just those around them. There's a clear difference often in stories written about disability by disabled people versus non-disabled people.
As much as we want to get these stories out, we also want to ensure we're not spreading any misinformation. So please call us out on it.
A common reminder I should have mentioned in our discussion - Jack and I are not experts on these topics, just people who have personal and witnessed experiences around them and follow them closely.
But if you have more insight or especially corrections to anything we talk about, please share!
Oh hey, it's us!
Extremely grateful to AndrΓ©s for having me on to discuss all these critically important topics impacting us all right now, as well as how they relate to Star Wars and how we all experience the stories we love.
- Greg
Interesting choice of example. π¬
Very good points!
I gotta find the disc, as I realized it's one of those that was still physical... π
I've never even installed it on my PS5...
I was just thinking rather than a season 2 maybe they should give us a movie, like Mando.
Not gonna hold my breath though. π
Commented and reiterated that this will cost disabled lives, especially given increased spread and mutation without widespread vaccine use.
Maybe I should have included increases in disability itself, and the related cost to the government and economy, since that's all they seem concerned with.
You immediately came to mind. π
Really hope @lydiakang.bsky.social extra enjoyed the 10th episode of Andor S2. π
(Lina Soh reference aside...)
I've seen a couple of posts about them being available later, including one from the official account yesterday. Just not clear where or when.
They're going for like $60 on eBay. How much were they at Celebration, in USD?
I NEED the balloon driver.
Did you get it at Celebration? I saw the exclusive version from there Celebration, but apparently they're releasing it more broadly? I can never find where to buy any of these online.
Agree with this. But also heads-up - lots of us having trouble getting it to load reliably tonight. Apparently D+ didn't anticipate the demand...
With a Disney+ loading screen..? π
Well, resilience is in our name but we cover Star Wars. π
But we've been talking about branching out for especially noteworthy stories that cross over, so it might be a good opportunity for us to share a story like his.
Again, doesn't solve the exploitative writing, but Andor does represent an opportunity to provide more context and maybe lessen the impact of treating these disabled characters as disposable for the story.
We'll see tonight, and I'll probably have more plenty more thoughts to share after.
- Greg
Saw Gerrera confronts Willmon in Andor, gripping him by the shoulders in a tense moment. Willmon wears a breathing mask while Saw, clad in his distinctive armored suit, looks distressed and intense amid a dim, industrial setting.
* See also: Saw. Hopefully we'll also see some exploration of his state in these final few days before choosing not to try and save his own life. We have gotten more context for his ailments this season, so maybe we'll see how that plays into his story in this last arc.
Tivik and Cassian from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in a tense conversation, with Tivik looking alarmed in a dimly lit setting.
Ideally we'll see more of the "Terrible things on behalf of the Rebellion" that he and others have done. Then at least then murdering Tivik will no longer be an unfortunate standalone writing decision that just uses the death of a disabled person to further a main character's story. *
They can't really make up for all the ableism in the writing of Rogue One, but they can at least qualify some of the worst acts shown and creative decisions made in that movie by making sure one of its main protagonists reaches his lowest point, validating the redemption he finds in that movie.
Eagerly anticipating the final story arc of Andor tonight.
But really apprehensive to see how the reluctant hero we've followed will finally evolve from someone who will risk everything to save an injured heist accomplice to someone who will shoot a disabled person in the back for his cause.
This includes just posting images from it. Especially about KEY moments.
Or sharing headlines with previews that do the same.

It would be cool if people could hold off on spoiling Tales of the Underworld till most of us get a chance to watch it...
(This is also about Andor)
Going live in less than 30 minutes!
