I did make my own instance. Works great for me. I've got three accounts on it - each for different people. But yeah I understand Mastodon is quite daunting at first, and if you're new it's a bit like shouting into an empty room because there's no suggested posts or forced content.

You have to get onto the right instance. Choose one that suits your interests, or make your own. If you're just on one of the general servers you'll get the idiots. Same everywhere really.
Ironically I found I hated threads and never use it. It's a bit like Facebook - even though I don't ever want to see right wing propaganda I get the occasional little nugget shoved onto my timeline. I'm more of a #Mastodon guy. My own instance. My own rules.
