The Tyee is proud to have published this important investigation by @rachelgilmore.bsky.social. We condemn this egregious harassment of a journalist for doing her job, and have offered support as she deals with this disturbing situation.
Excerpt of Western Standard article reads: Alexander Vriend, vice-president of Second Sons, says the timing of the articles and the limited public release of the government brief raise questions about how the story was developed and who had access to the information. "I think the intention behind it was specifically only to give it to certain actors so that they could create the narrative that they wanted," Vriend told the Western Standard, noting the CBC article said the outlet obtained the brief but did not specify how.
Excerpt of Western Standard article reads: When the Western Standard reached out to Gilmore for comment on whether she had been coordinating with CAHN or Public Safety via email Gilmore said, "Why are you, as supposed journalists, reporting on Second Sons Canada's baseless conspiracy theories?" "That's the only source for this. Quite the "journalistic" choice!" Gilmore said. The Western Standard has reached out to Public Safety Canada several times for a copy of the brief and has yet to receive an answer as of the time of publication.
Oh, and CAJ *did* put out a statement defending the Western Standard.
Yes, the western standard that just tried to discredit my recent story with a piece that primarily relies on an interview with a white nationalist who has talked about rounding up people from India at gunpoint to deport them.
The idea that imperfect victims aren’t worth defending is much bigger than me, and is something I had to speak out about.
What kind of world does it create when only some of us are deemed worthy of institutional support and safety?

Okay, actually doing this now.
Because with the sun setting on the second full day after the nazis came after me in person, I’m realizing no mainstream media cares to cover it and no press freedom cares to condemn it.
I don’t want to spend too much time with that realization and its implications!
Seeing that no press freedom orgs have rushed to defend and help @rachelgilmore.bsky.social makes me ask, for the millionth time, what do CJFE, PEN, etc even do? Why exist at all when you do fuck all to fight censorship and intimidation?
I haven’t cried yet but oh man, this one is getting me close :(

I’m just a bit sad the broader institutions meant to defend press freedom in this country rarely seem to care about far-right attacks on journalism.
I will also say that it’s a bit wild to me that no press freedom organization or professional journalistic association has tried to contact me or even put out a statement here.
I mean Jesus Christ. A little solidarity from institutions would be nice here!
