If I had a nickel for every time Franz Ferdinand was involved in the precursor events of a world war, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice

He can just use state power to make bad things worse, blame others, and demand that we don’t hold elections. That’s it, that’s the whole plot; and if we don’t see it that’s on us. (3/3)

The first time an Iranian death in custody caused an international stir. But we really are revolted by that behaviour. Part of the reason for our reaction to trump.

We see the direction the US is going and all know it is evil. That there is no excuse. We saw where this same evil led in WW2.

In 90s we had some level of business dealings with them. Then, in 2003, they raped, tortured and killed an Iranian-Canadian journalist they’d jailed.

They doubled down when we called them on it. The Iranian government can eat shit, but we want reform not war.

Zahra Kazemi - Wikipedia

On the selling of weapons, etc. Iran doesn’t have a legitimate grievance.

They’ve been helping Putin kill Ukrainians for some time. This is decidedly not in Canadian or European interests.

The reason Canada-Iran relations are bad is not because of the US.

Also diplomatic statements are best backed up with other diplomatic activities.

Best statement in the world still isn’t going to be enough to end a war on its own.

UK & France also have their own interests in the Middle East separate from US. Both are former colonial powers and are closer & more dependent on the ME for energy needs.

The point is to encourage others to stay out before they join in. If they do, they should know better than to run crying to us.

That language was what I’d suggested a couple days ago. UK/France was not allowing strikes.

Once a country gets involved in attacks, they can no longer claim to be defending themselves. Doesn’t matter if it’s their bombs or just their runway.

Our relationship with Israel should be similar to 1980s South Africa. That is to say, nothing until they end apartheid and other atrocities.

That’s the reason I suggested β€œallies uninvolved in the attack”. So I agree with you on that.

For geographic reasons we should want to have a good relationship with the US eventuallyβ€”once they start acting like something other than a rogue state.

China is going to eat the US’s lunch for the next 50+ years. They don’t even have to lift a finger.

Taking Taiwan would interfere with that and destroy most of Taiwan’s value at the same time.

Xi is a dictator, not a village idiot.

This is what the next President has to do for Trump. He served despite being Constitutionally ineligible. It’s all voided.

Canada Is Already at War with the USβ€”We Just Don’t Know It Yet | The Walrus Conflicts don’t always start with an invasion

β€œCanada, like all of the rest of the resource-rich nations in what the US now considers its own backyard, is looked upon as real estate to be acquired.”

Iran’s people were facing a horrible shortage of water before the war began. If we are destroying desalination plants and setting fire to Teheran we are committing unfathomable crimes.

Iran's FM condemns US attack on Qeshm's freshwater desalination plant, warns of grave consequences US President Donald Trump announced that Iran promised not to attack its neighbours anymore

Multiple news outlets are reporting a US attack on an Iranian #desalination plant.
If verified, this violates international law protecting #water systems during wars, and it sets a dangerous precedent, given intense dependence of Gulf countries on desalination.

Staff at the nation’s largest Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility have placed bets on which detainee will be the next to die by suicide, according to new reporting from the Associated Press based on 911 calls and detainee accounts.

I’m skeptical of timeline, ability to protect privacy and whether harms are mediated by age (vs. engagement algorithms). Trust also takes time.

Parents unwilling to supervise their own children have no business trying to supervise other adults as they access information and express themselves.

American Service-Members' Protection Act - Wikipedia

Yes, but it won’t happen until after.

The international community will have to keep the pressure on. US instinct will be to set accountability aside in the interest of unity/healing.

Should also demand repeal of ASPA (Hague Invasion Act).

Agreed, it will take a team. But in the end, you only have one president and they’re going to have to wear the mantle for all of it.

The things that need to be done will be difficult (reform), ugly (accountability), and out of character (apology/amends). You’ll only have one shot. Don’t flinch.

We've launched negotiations with Canada for a Digital Trade Agreement.

This will make it easier and safer to do [EU-CA] business online and across borders and provide stronger protections for consumers↓
