A male common redpoll on a frosty spruce tree branch with a warm yellow orange background.
He is a small finch with brown stripes, a red stained chest and a bright red cap. He also has an adorable little yellow beak!
This winter, we had hoped to see the large flocks that an irruption can bring, but that hasnโt happened.
But I think the non stop chattering of all the pine siskins finally drew the attention of some redpolls!
This male Common Redpoll was busy foraging in the branches on a frosty morning!

A close-up of a Long-tailed Tit perched on a thin branch, facing the camera. Its round body is fluffed up with mostly white plumage, with subtle brown tones along the sides. The bird grips the branch with small dark feet against a softly blurred background.

Photo of a Townsend's Solitaire perched at the top of a juniper by Charles Gates. Text on the photo says "Unsolicited Bird Fact: If Townsend's Solitaires drank cocktails, their drink of choice would probably be a gin and tonic. During the winter they eat almost exclusively juniper berries. During the breeding season, solitaires move into higher elevation (or latitude) coniferous forests where they feed primarily on insects.
If we knew anything we'd make a gin and name it after these elegant birds.
Did you ask for a bird fact? No, but you're getting one whether you like it or not. ๐ชถ

Three thousand sandhill cranes fly and strut in front of onlookers on a plain in Monte Vista.
If youโre not experiencing 3000 cranes at the Monte Vista Crane Festival, what are you even doing???

Rosy-faced lovebird. Here are a pair of small mainly green birds with sweet pink faces.. These are peeking out of a nesting cavity in a saguaro ๐ต cactus.
These charming birds are an invasive species to the Phoenix, AZ area...I lived in Mesa, AZ for many years and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing them. I always heard them first, and wow, they are fast! ๐๐ชถ

A Blue Jay is caught mid stride, trotting toward us at a seemingly breakneck speed through the light covering of snow on a bright day in early January.
The Blue Jay opts for terrestrial locomotion.

A Double-crested Cormorant walks along a wire, its wings spread for balance. It looks like a small dragon.
Today's #BirdOfTheDay prompt is #SteppingOut. This dragon -- I mean #DoubleCrestedCormorant --no, I mean dragon -- is going for a walk on a wire, for some reason.

A sobering fact: Weโve lost around 3 billion #birds in North America since 1970 โ a loss of nearly one in four birds.
And yet, this week a congressional panel is meeting to consider weakening the #MigratoryBirdTreatyAct.
We'll continue to fight for them.
