Thrilled to share that our work on neural circuits and economic decision-making is now published in @cp-neuron.bsky.social . Huge thanks to @camillopadoasch.bsky.social and @xjwanglab for this journey.

When we started this study, we actually worked pretty hard to reproduce IIA violations (decoy effects) but we were unable to. In the Discussion we speculate of why that might be.

Neuronal Activity in Orbitofrontal Cortex during Trinary Choices under Risk Economic choice entails computing and comparing the subjective values of different goods. Orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is thought to contribute to both operations. However, previous work focused almost ...

New ms on trinary choices! Somewhat surprisingly, our monkeys’ choices satisfied IIA (independence of irrelevant alternatives). In OFC, decision variables were represented in the same way under trinary and under binary choices. This property implies IIA.

Convergence of efficient and predictive coding in multimodal sensory processing The existence of pathways connecting different sensory modalities in the brain challenges the traditional view of sensory systems as operating independently. However, the reasons and mechanisms underl...

I developed a normative coding theory for feedback-modulated canonical networks, providing a unified view of (1) efficient & predictive coding, (2) computational & algorithmic principles, (3) unimodal & multimodal sensory processing.

A Neural Circuit Framework for Economic Choice: From Building Blocks of Valuation to Compositionality in Multitasking Value-guided decisions are at the core of reinforcement learning and neuroeconomics, yet the basic computations they require remain poorly understood at the mechanistic level. For instance, how does t...

New collaborative ms! We built & trained a neural network that is biophysically realistic, performs multiple economic choice tasks, and provides insights into orbitofrontal cortex.

Most interestingly, temporal dynamics indicated a combination of feedforward and feedback between layers, and pointed to L5 as the locus where winner-take-all value comparison takes place
Additional cool finding: in each layer, functional cell groups were organized in clusters of ~100 um diameter

We 2P imaged layer 2/3 and layer 5 of mice choosing between different juices. Decision variables were differentially represented across layers: juice-specific offer values and their spatial configs were predominant in L2/3; spatial offer values, chosen side, and chosen value were predominant in L5.

New ms! We’ve long hypothesized that different groups of neurons in OFC are the building blocks of a decision circuit. We now show that this circuit has a laminar architecture.
