So my guess is that yeah, if they were using some sort of system like Stripe, there's a very good chance that provider just gave SubStar the finger, leaving them no choice.
Or someone accidentally dropped a table in prod. Really, either way could be true.

This stinks of them having lost a payments provider.
When a company integrates with a payment provider, they usually don't retain your card details themselves. They get a token that only works with that provider. It puts the incredible PCI-DSS burden on the provider.
