I have been thinking a lot about this question. I saw David's YOLO'd paper, and have done similar things on my own. His paper's abstract is pasted below.

1. It's a remarkable achievement that CC can do this with minimal prompting.
2. The paper is unbelievably banal from a research standpoint.

A couple of thoughts about AI and academia (in economics at least): you can’t look at Claude Code without concluding that it’s a complete game changer in the production of research. 1/

I see a lot of econ/socsci Bluesky asking for AI starter advice. IMO the highest impact, low cost tweak to your workflow is training an AI to follow *your* coding/writing prefs & habits.

Literally, tell Claude: "Look at <XYZ dirs>. ID common themes, styles & conventions. Write them to a .md file."

How Google Maps quietly allocates survival across London’s restaurants - and how I built a dashboard to see through it I wanted a dinner recommendation and got a research agenda instead. Using 13000+ restaurants, I rebuild its ratings with machine learning and map how algorithmic visibility actually distributes power.

I wanted dinner recommendations so I scraped 13,000+ London restaurants and accidentally discovered Google Maps is running a shadow economy. Anyway here's a dashboard and a political economy thesis: open.substack.com/pub/laurenle...

Platform Design Can Stifle Innovation Lessons from Apple’s iOS App Store rating system

New write-up of my paper β€œPlatform Design & Innovation Incentives” is up on Platform Papers! Apple’s old App Store rating rules curbed app updates, likely slowing product innovation. Thoughtful platform design matters. #econsky

Research at risk: Life-saving heart pumps for babies | Cornell Chronicle After receiving a stop-work order from the federal government, the future of a device to help children with heart defects is uncertain.

One of grants frozen at Cornell: $6.7M (4 yrs) to develop heart pumps for babies born w/ heart defects.

It took decades of work to get to point of prepping device for in-human clinical trials. No private company could do this.

The cruelty of the Trump administration is heartbreaking. So to speak.

Modern supply chains don't look like trade theory 101!

They involve constant border crossings, each now hit by tariffs.

Tariffs raise prices, but the more important thing they do is disrupt supply relationships.

Apple’s Sports app is awful. It *simultaneously* reports 18 seconds left with scores in the 80s, a 74-76 loss for the Heels, and a 102-96 win (see box score).

Maybe we don’t need to worry about self-preferencing after all…

Earlier this semester a student showed me how they had dumped all my lecture slides into ChatGPT to create a study guide. The results were awful. It was actively misleading the student. I don't yet know if this product will be better, but I know we need to be proactive about these issues.

I haven't had a chance to test this out, so I can't comment on the specifics of this product. But our students are already using LLMs-often badly-so I'm glad to see serious attempts to develop this technology specifically for educational purposes.
