Caught up on episodes #193 and #194 of the @thefirethesetimes.com podcast with Amos Goldberg on Gaza, the Holocaust, Holocaust studies and genocide studies and this whole, oftentimes very silly, debate — really informative for those who care thefirethesetimes.com/2025/05/25/i...
This cannot be the new normal

In case I've only recommended this podcast 999 times:
I edited this episode. It's really powerful. Hearing Maram speak at length about her daily life in Gaza under Israeli siege and bombardment is just ... I don't know how to communicate how privileged we are to hear the stories of someone resisting genocide. We need to listen, we need to do more.
TFTT 195 and 196/ The Wars Within the War on Gaza w/ Maram Humaid
We spoke to Gaza journalist Maram Humaid about the many layers of Israel's genocide @thefirethesetimes.com. There was even an Israeli airstrike nearby during our recording.

Finally, they spoke about “The Holocaust and the Nakba: A New Grammar of Trauma and History”, which Goldberg co-edited with Bashir Bashir, and argue for the necessity of new horizons in our imaginaries.

This is especially relevant with the Gaza genocide as there have been scholars of the Holocaust who have previously argued that no genocides could compare to it, while also being willing to argue that Israel is fighting the new Nazis. Such ahistorical statements are deeply problematic.
Goldberg and Ayoub also got into Hitler's 1939 Reichstag speech to explore how 'intent' has been used to understand genocides historically, and how the legal tradition risks setting back Holocaust and Genocide studies decades.
Intent, Holocaust Studies and the Gaza Genocide w/ Amos Goldberg
In this episode of The Fire These Times, Goldberg and Ayoub also got into how genocides are often preceded by claims of self-defense. In fact, claims of self-defense by the party committing genocide are common throughout history. Israel is no exception to this rule. www.patreon.com/posts/tftt-1...
In 2024, Goldberg wrote a paper for the Journal of Genocide Research exploring how the question of ‘intent’ is used in discussions around genocides, including the Gaza one. It's open access.

In this wonderful conversation with @mollycrabapple.bsky.social, @ayoub.bsky.social mentions his work looking into the "bloodless civil war" between Yiddish and Hebrew and we are incredibly excited to be publishing it next week.
Bella conversazione sulla riscoperta della tradizione del Bund - l'unione dei lavoratori ebrei - e cosa possa significare per l'oggi l'intraducibile parola yiddish "Doikayt".
Really looking forward to learning more about this history:
Cited this in my final lecture ❤️
Seriously, you probably need to listen to this, but it just doesn’t seem like a thing that you need to listen to. I think you should trust me. Just listen.
post-🎧 reflections:
the Bund & the concept of "Hereness" mirrors the practice of mutual aid in that both ask of us to start w. where we are & what we have. both ask of us to stop looking outward for solutions & instead build & invest in our current geographical temporality.

"And this earth belongs to you just as much as it does to anyone"
