GVA/capita within Great Britain, by distance from London (moving 30 miles window). With major (and some non-major) cities shown. I stop at 500 miles because beyond Aberdeen the populations are so low that the data becomes very noisy (sorry Shetland). Northern Ireland had data issues. Sorry.

And this GIF should show in a bit more detail what I'm doing and how.

Using the ONS small area GVA estimates and my population around a point tool I calculated GVA/capita for every 30 mile wide ring at increasing distance from London. The picture shows where I calculated GVA and population for to get the answer at 100 miles.

So apparently one of these is 'salt of the earth, tells it like it is, speaks to the masses' and the other is not.

An important correction to the record. I have returned to the original @annastansbury.bsky.social paper and indeed Northern Ireland IS in there. Also has the extra breakdown of degree types which some have asked after.

I could have a good guess, but actually it doesn't matter. I sort of agree with you I think. 90% is near enough double. And that's a lot when you're near split half and half.

20.02.2026 21:45 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Got you, thanks. Yes, I'd missed that. You'll see on the other FT graph the premium is lower, and closer to what I expected. But I don't know why the difference is what it is.

20.02.2026 21:43 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Where are you getting 90% premium from? I must be missing it in my readings of the graphs and the data.

Minimum wages across the three are very similar. (Don't be confused by the low federal rate in the USA, there are higher state and city levels in many/most places). I happen to think the UK minimum wage is now too high. But it's a small problem compared to the failure to create jobs at higher wages.

20.02.2026 20:44 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

The USA and the Netherlands have much much stronger economies than the UK. They are creating exactly the type of jobs at the salaries we're not which explains a large part of the gap.

I feel like my piece explains that.

When I first spoke to @joshih.bsky.social in 2020, he'd just launched The Mill and was thinking of setting something up in Liverpool.

Less than six years later, today we're launching our seventh title in Leeds (@leedsnewlocalpaper.bsky.social).

At long last, we’re launching in Leeds! Ever since I started The Mill, people have asked us to create a publication across the Pennines.

If 500 people pledge to become members, we’re going to hire two journalists and do it. Please share with Leeds friends.

* for this purpose I've used the Leeds local authority of 800,000 population which flatters building here. The whole city region measure will be substantially lower. But then,... homes are very substantially cheaper.

Fantastic piece in the @FT on London's poor record of building the homes it desperately needs. I added in another major global city* in the UK which seemed to have slipped out of the data during production πŸ˜‰ giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...

Is it "serious wacko stuff"? Have I "gone down that road"? Is it "telling in and of itself"? Obviously it's up to you. I hope you'll bring forward your sceptical evaluation on that matter to whether I believe "China built a railway station in a day".

I think I'm reasonable in saying this is well-studied in Britain. This is the write up by @whippletom.bsky.social in The Times for example. A very fair write up, which he wouldn't have done without broad work behind the theory (which I dislike and am sceptical of).
