“I swear I will devote all my energies to the welfare of the German people, protect the laws of the German nation, diligently fulfill the duties incumbent upon me and conduct my affairs without party bias and equitably towards all people.”
Adolf Hitler's oath to the Weimar Constitution, January 30th, 1933

Man, if only we needed old books for researching a history podcast…

And organization. When you’re surveying a dozen different books for a topic, it’s so much easier to keep track of what’s where. Sure they’re spread all over the house, with notes and tabs, but it’s far easier than trying to do it with e-books.

Truth - we need to preserve it.
When we've done research into pre-Nazi Germany, diaries and letters have been invaluable for getting a feel for what people were thinking. "Important" people writing memoirs is useful, but they tend to present a rather curated perspective. A frank letter is gold.

We're going to have a lot to say about this time in history.

Agreed. But half is enough - the Nazis never got over 40% of the popular vote. They just maneuvered it such that they didn't have any opposition after that.

It's an interesting what-if. The tides of revolution had been stirring in Europe for some time though, and Nicholas didn't seem inclined toward making particularly wise choices.

It's hard to find that place between "too soon" and "too late". Lots of people were openly critical of the Nazis. Once the Nazis had juuust enough power, those people went to labor camps. A solid 10 years before the Holocaust, resistance was already suppressed with violence.

Let’s be fair - were he writing today, Shakespeare absolutely would have called some people hoes.
But if he wrote it, it would rhyme and burn both coming and going.

If the US had been more open to refugees in the 20s and 30s, the holocaust might never have happened. As it was, we closed our doors, and in some cases turned people away from just outside the gates - to take their chances back in Germany.

Rudolf Höss wrote that gassing was so much better than the alternative of having the SS just shoot people directly, because it was "easier" for everyone involved. They didn't gas people because it was more convenient - they did it because they didn't have to look them in the eye while they died.

"In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and of adders. How terrific was His fight for the world against the Jewish poison. Today, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before - the fact that it was for this that He had to shed His blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice. And as a man I have the duty to see to it that human society does not suffer the same catastrophic collapse as did the civilization of the ancient world some two thousand years ago - a civilization which was driven to its ruin through this same Jewish people."
- Adolf Hitler, 1922
He was rather upfront about it, even early on…

USC Shoah Fdn
We remember film producer Michele Singer Reiner and director Rob Reiner, friends of the USC Shoah Foundation. Michele’s mother, Holocaust survivor Nicole Silberkleit, recorded her testimony with us in our founding year of 1994. She was one of the first 300 survivors to do so.

If only the Nazis weren’t so thorough with their documentation. Can’t do a Holocaust on a real, industrial, scale without good record keeping.
Wasn’t until they realized just how much of that was going to come back around that they started destroying those records…

So much this. If history teaches us anything, it’s that the world is moved one person, one day at a time. We’re responsible for what we do, with what we have, today.
