Very cool paper!
Despite the negative sides of individualism (e.g., pandemic response), it seems to be a strong motivator for innovation at the individual level and acts as an important non-cognitive skill in this context. π
Thanks to my PhD advisors @simonwiederhold.bsky.social & Gerard Roland for their support! π
All results are in line with theory, which would predict a positive effect due to the emphasis on personal achievements, uniqueness, and stand-out ideas in individualism.
The results for innovation production inputs also translate into direct output measures of innovation: IDV is strongly positively related to patenting behavior - also in the sample of PCT patents filed by a single inventor.
Empirical strategy: With data from PIAAC, the PCT, and the GSOEP, I compare migrants from different cultural backgrounds within the same destination country (epidemiological approach), but I also abstract from the migration context by using personal and regional variation in IDV.
More individualist people are significantly more likely to work in innovative jobs - ranging from broadly classified creative occupations (+8 PP relative to a 43% share for a SD β¬οΈ in IDV) to research π¬, performing arts π¨, and ambitious self-employment. π
Key finding: Selection into innovative occupations and knowledge diffusion on the job through learning explain 44% of the sizeable IDV productivity premium (~8% wage increase for the IDV difference between Argentina, Germany, and the US).
We know that individualist societies are more #innovative β but we do not know the underlying individual behaviors. I investigate comprehensively and internationally how #individualism affects selection into innovative jobs, knowledge diffusion, #creativity, and #patenting.
Hey #EconSky, I am excited to share my new paper on βIndividualism, Creativity, and Innovationβ: ideas.repec.org/p/jgu/wpaper/2β¦. I show that #individualism β the #culture of personal achievement and personal responsibility β affects #innovative #productivity at the individual level. #JMP ππ§΅
Letβs share my new paper before it gets too crowded on here ;)
Welcome to #EconSky, @lennardzyska.bsky.social!! Good to see the OG KU PhD students represented here π
