I think the thing that makes me feel the most old out of anything else is scrolling through facebook and realizing that I cannot remember the maiden names of most the people I went to high school and college with.

I have posted this story on facebook several times since I've left the church, and every time, a new person comments on it saying "I was there and seeing this happen started my deconstruction journey."

I was taught my whole life that gay people were these horrible, awful sinners and were straight up evil.

there was an evil person in that room, but it wasn't the queer 16 yo. It was the man on a chair, weaponizing his authority in order to harm impressionable teenagers.

Instead, I just left. I never invited my friend to church again. I knew it wasn't a safe place for them. I stopped looking up to my pastor and started really questioning the disparity between how the Bible said Christians should act and the way I was actually seeing them behave.

But I knew in that moment that his tirade had nothing to do with God's message and everything to do with his own ego. I wanted to say "My friend's not going to hell because theyre gay, they're going to hell because no christian is willing to look past that to show them the true love of god."

I could see the spit fly from his mouth as he spewed his hatred. Red in the face, eyes bulging, forehead vein throbbing.

After service, I went to speak to him and before I could even get a word out, he said "i'm not going to water down the message of god to avoid hurting someone's feelings."

I was so wrong. My youth pastor probably got 3 minutes into his planned sermon before he grabbed a chair from the front row and stood on it, towering over my best friend. He spent the next 30 minutes berating my friend and telling them they were going to hell.

I had been taught about a god who loved and met you where you were. I had learned about how Jesus ate with sinners and low lifes. When I brought my friend to church with me, I expected them to be met with that same love and gentleness that I was taught was an outpouring of God in your life.

In HS, I had a best friend who was bi. I didn't believe they were going to hell for their sexuality, I thought they were going to hell because they weren't "saved". In my mind if God wanted to do something about their sexuality, he could deal with that after salvation, but the salvation was priority

within 15 minutes of the apartments is my job, walmart, publix, winn dixie, most every fast food restaurant, several local restaurants, a handful of coffee places, a circle k, multiple bars and concert venues, and my favorite mountain/park to hike.
and our fav chinese restaurant is 20 minutes away
