I just found it annoying. To a teenage girl he was just a stupid man who messed his girlfriends around.
We had a very old school English teacher who was ex army and chose very boy friendly texts. We also did The Long and The Short and The Tall, Buddy and Kes (though I quite enjoyed the last two).
I had to read that for GCSE (along with Wilfred Owen and Billy Liar) and I hated all three.
