This #WorldWildlifeDay, crimes like illegal logging and wildlife trafficking threaten the planet and our natural security. We are less safe when criminals profit from animals, timber, and more.

New gorilla baby spotted.
Mondika, in Congo’s Nouabalé Ndoki National Park, is one of the world’s oldest western lowland gorilla research sites.
The Metetele group is one of three gorilla groups that have been habituated there. It now numbers 12 with the birth of this baby in early 2026. 🌍
Decisions at upcoming #CMSCOP15 will have far-reaching implications for biodiversity conservation, ecological connectivity, and sustainable development.
We are urging action to halt the accelerating decline of migratory species worldwide, like giant otters.

Researchers also recently deployed an acoustic monitoring unit on each side of Hudson Canyon, a remarkable underwater canyon that we have nominated to become a National Marine Sanctuary. First dedicated attempt to 'listen' for whales, dolphins, and ocean noise in the area. 5/
Humpbacks in nearshore/mid-shelf areas also seem to eat a wider variety of prey than those much further offshore-valuable info to guide conservation efforts and ecosystem monitoring. 4/
Through this work, we've learned the area is:
—An important year-round habitat for fin whales (video)
—North Atlantic right whales can sometimes be heard year-round

Through research, the team collects the science needed to inform policies and best practices to protect whales and other cetaceans in the area- including fin whales, North Atlantic right whales, humpback whales; sei whales, and minke whales. 2/
