A man asked me last night what publishing needs to do for literary fiction to begin appealing to men again. I said, as nicely as I could, that, with over 2,000 books published every Tuesday, of which many would appeal to men, itβs not a publishing problem, itβs a men problem.

Today is St Davidβs Day: patron saint of Wales, of course, but also of vegetarians and poets. He was reputed to have helped introduce bees to Ireland. He is famously quoted as saying βGwnewch y pethau bychainβ, meaning βDo the little thingsβ. Small changes and good choices matter, especially now.

This seminar will investigate the legal, institutional, and cultural practices that condition the lives of transgender people. We will devote substantial attention to the contemporary push by some law...
A little personal update I'm pleased to share.
For this Spring term, I'll be lecturing at the University of Virginia School of Law, co-teaching a seminar course titled Transgender History, Recognition, Regulation and Rights.
I'm honored to have the opportunity to present this important topic.

I helped my colleague's son with his college application essay last fall. He did multiple drafts responding to my feedback and I spent a few hours on Zoom with him. Just learned he was accepted into his top choice of college! So happy to hear his diligence paid off.

Applied Theatrics: Exit, Pursued by a bear | American Shakespeare Center
The timekeeping Bear at the Blackfriars Conference is the perfect example of applied theatrics.
Or bears:
βUsually, all the Bear has to do is appear, and the tardy presenter will shamefacedly remove themselvesβ¦ Other times, the presenter may try to rush through the rest of their paperβ¦ in which case the Bear will physically steal their paperβ

A collection of six ominous bird valentines set against a background of pink hearts. In the first one, a Canada Goose looks angry and hisses and the text says "Baby, I'll make you fall head over heels if you approach within 10m of my nest." In the second, an American white pelican opens its mouth to eat the reader and the text says "There are plenty of fish in the sea, but I want this one." In the third valentine, a Black Vulture looks suspiciously at the reader and the text says "I will love you until you die. And after that, I'll love you even more." A Southern Cassowary stands proudly against the heart-covered background. The text says "My wattles are red. My head is blue. My deadly reputation has been somewhat overblown, but I'd kill for you." In the fifth valentine, a Northern Giant-Petrel stands open-billed next to a large brown furry object, and the text says "Let's seal the deal by sharing a 3000 kg elephant seal carcass." In panel 6, a happy-looking Bearded Vulture holds a bone in its beak, and the text says "I love every part of you, especially your bones."
Ominous bird valentines.
