Two NZ cinemas made it onto the TimeOut 100 greatest cinemas list this year! Congrats to the Lumiere and Roxy (and also to the Astor and Sun over in Melbourne, both of which are great). Go see some movies

These are the 4 things AI can do well:
β’Clean up your email inbox (badly)
β’Give my shittiest neighbor (Alan) something to talk about at a party
β’Tell a 12 yr old to kill himself
β’Incinerate a school at 10:16 AM on a Tuesday
You can see why we need to base our economy around it
I once fought an X-wing pilot so hard I cried into Keanu Reeves' arms afterward
βI donβt use AI for creative work, just the grant applicationsβ
As someone who reads grant applications, itβs extremely obvious when you do this, and it doesnβt engender confidence that you can actually do the creative work
Iβd forgotten gaming! Mostly for that reason. Also my understanding is that PC games are so wildly unoptimised these days that itβs diminishing returns on top of diminishing returns
Realistically the only people who have needed to buy a new computer in the last decade (or maybe even longer) are people who didn't have one already, people doing advanced creative work, or people whose old computer broke down
Every Oscar-nominated film in the VFX category does something remarkable, whether it's CG characters, compositing, or simulations, but Avatar does all of that for nearly every element in nearly every shot, for three and a half hours. It's honestly embarrassing *for Avatar* that it's even competing.
They're gonna have billions of people install it and fucking hate it but still be data points in their "the people want AI!" narrative
It's so bittersweet watching world-class VFX artists discuss their innovative and brilliant VFX work on their Oscar-nominated movies, while they're burdened by the knowledge that Avatar 3 is probably gonna take the statue (and deserve it)
And Movie Man on Stanmore Road (which carried mostly VHS, and mostly pretty rare VHS at that, right up until it closed around the quakes) was a grubby little chip shop
My first job was at Video Ezy! I still vividly remember the guy who would come in weekly to ONLY rent porn and ONLY ever on VHS (this was like 2007)
Influencer's fleeing Dubai right now.
This is an incredible piece of journalism that I can't recommend enough. It's further proof why you need to support independent media
There are some roles open for auditions but they are all youth roles (ie nothing suiting you or I). If you know someone though: courttheatre.org.nz/let-the-righ...
Putting together an audio mood board for my upcoming LET THE RIGHT ONE IN original score (for stage) and getting quite excited and daunted at the task
It's called Remember Me, directed by Jean-François Asselin, and it was 2013, 13 years ago, holy fuck
There was a short at Fantastic Fest a decade ago about a guy who feared he would die if no one was thinking about him, and he tries tactic after tactic before (iirc) ultimately landing on what we'd now describe as outrage bait as the most surefire way to stay alive
I think about that short a lot
Yessssss get that repost Andrew
The Internets are full of Sickos these days ...

Joe Dante and Hideo Kojima are close seconds but no director was more right about the future of war than Barry Levinson with the 1992 box office flop Toys.
Guys he's not starting a war to distract from the Epstein files. He's starting a war because he wants to start a war. Killing people in other countries makes him horny. If it also distracts from the Epstein files, great, but he doesn't really give a shit either way.
