After a lot of work, delays and difficulties, we are almost finishing the new @neoprego.org research base at Serra da Capivara! ๐๏ธ๐ง๐
This base will provide great stability for us to continue doing long-term research on the capuchin monkeys of Serra da Capivara and their incredible culture.
Weโre finishing our fieldwork season in Ubajara National Park ๐ง๐ท, where we collected๐ฉธand other samples from the wild capuchin monkeys we study here.
Now we have a lot of samples to analyse from genetics to health indicators.

This weekend, we had our first CapCult Project meeting at Ubajara National Park. We brought the team from Serra da Capivara to learn about the environment and the monkeys and share information with the local research team.

A figure from a preprint paper by O'Malley et al. showing anvils of different stone materials before and after their use by capuchin monkeys to crack nuts. The number of hits by a monkey is shown for each anvil, ranging from 84 to 1758 hits. Only one anvil, made of thick concrete and labeled (b), is intact afterwards. The others, made of siltstone, quartzite, sandstone, thin concrete and ironstone are all broken apart to some degree after their use. The paper is titled 'Material matters: raw material influences stone tool performance in capuchin monkeys'

Our โfield tableโ used in the activity of capturing and collecting blood from the monkeys, which we carried out last week. It was the first time we did this type of collection at Serra da Capivara, in this case we want to analyze the DNA of this population with unique behaviors! ๐งช๐

Now is the peak of the cashew season at Serra da Capivara (northeastern Brazil). Capuchin monkeys here eat the apple, and can also open the nuts with stone tools to access the nutritious endosperm! ๐งช๐

I know we're all up to our ears in political activity, but this bill really matters, and it's the sort that might well die for lack of attention. It would prohibit the private ownership of primates.
As the thread says, like many species, primates are cute when they're small, but not so much later.

Our first video here is the cougar recorded by camera-trap resting on one of the capuchin monkeys nut-cracking sites at Ubajara Park ๐ง๐ท. This is part of our member Tati Valenรงa PhD project to measure predation pressure on the monkeysโ behavior.
