My apartment added locks to the common areas. Within a day, tenants were jamming them open with rocks and sticks. It’s a good reminder: even well-intentioned security controls will get ignored or even actively sabotaged if they’re seen as inconvenient. Security is always a people problem.

End-to-end encryption is secure because it protects the contents of your communications in transit between the endpoints. If you make one of those endpoints an editor at The Atlantic, no amount of encryption is going to save you from your own stupidity.
On the bright side, it just got a lot easier to explain why, when a vendor says “rest assured, your data is secure because our product has end-to-end encryption” you should not rest assured.
If you are serious about resisting American fascism, imperialism, colonialism, all the isms... think about also resisting the Canadian versions of the very same thing, at home and abroad. Lots of yous already do this, and that's great! Just don't fall into the nationalist trap that's taking hold.
Never forgot what the Canadian flag actually stands for. Remember who taught you about maple trees, about the food from these lands, the ways to keep safe and warm. Some of your ancestors have already resisted Americans alongside ours, learn from the true histories, not the nationalist versions.
Canadian national identity is as thin as toilet paper. The roots you have to this land are as shallow as the Kentucky bluegrass you obsess over keeping green. You're not *from* here. That's ok, you don't have to be. But don't delude yourself into thinking you'll fight for something you don't have.
Canadian socialization is all about a fantasy of being "better Americans". I'm sorry but you're not all that different. You won't resist American imperialism when it cuts off your supply lines, you won't wage a guerilla war based on a sense of pride and national unity that you don't actually have.
The boot that's been stamping our faces since long before Confederation is coming for you too. You've been shining it for generations, and now that you're getting a taste you panic. You think it's a novel feeling. It's not. So look to those with experience in this matter and learn from them.
I don't know how to describe what it feels like working on Indigenous data sovereignty projects while Canadians freak out about threats to their sovereignty.
