Our local utility quoted a 3 year build time for a substation for a 199 MW BESS installation. I bet a huge amount of that is lead time on transformers.
This kind of control would unlock interconnection, as risk of unintended consequences go way down. Also, given that traditional transformers have huge lead times, could shorted build out.
This podcast on solid state transformers has stuck with me. This feels like it could be one of the most transformative pieces of the energy transition. Actual routing control of electricity on the grid would wildly change what was possible.
