In einem Artikel für die Cinema Scope aus dem Jahr 2019 sprach der 3D-Künstler Blake Williams hinsichtlich der durch Machine-Learning generierten Bilder Kohlbergers von „anti-images“, die uns von jeglicher Materialität und Räumlichkeit trennen würden. Und tatsächlich geht das Sehen eines Rainer-Kohlberger-Filmes allzu oft mit dem Hinterfragen der eigenen Wahrnehmung einher, beinah so, als würden die Bilder erst just in jenem Moment entstehen, da wir sie erblicken. Im Gespräch reflektiert der Wahlberliner Kohlberger darüber, wie sich seine Videokunst (sowohl im gestalterischen Ansatz als auch in ihrer Präsentation) über die Jahre zunehmend der Kinoleinwand angenähert hat, spricht über die Nostalgie des Rauschens, seine Faszination für Glitch-Ästhetik und gibt Einsichten in seine collagenhafte Arbeitsweise.   Mit Unterstützung der AK Steiermark, Abteilung für Jugend und Lehrausbildung.

A night-black sequence in front of a wall of sound is followed by a hallucinatory passage without sound, which finally turns into shimmering Op art geometry. Strong light signals create afterimages on the retina, while specific acoustic stimuli stimulate the ear to generate sounds on its own, and the entire body is affected with an implicit loss of control. And in all the dizzying flickering, throbbing, and pulsating, a sun ball appears, largely bathed in vibrant colors.
