#IWD: Today we publish alarming data highlighting how #women journalists across Europe continue to face enhanced risk through systematic gender-based violence in the past year. Our unwavering solidarity with all women #media workers 🚺
#IWD is a moment to celebrate women journalists, and to name the dangers they face. In 2025, we recorded 438 attacks against women journalists in Europe: www.mapmf.org/explorer?f.e...
Gender-based attacks against women journalists are rising — with 53 gender-based alerts in 2025.
#NorthMacedonia: A recent defamation decision by the Court of Appeal against the Investigative Reporting Lab (IRL), one of 🇲🇰 leading investigative media platforms, is a worrying development for media freedom. We hope that this damaging ruling will be overturned. @mediafreedomeu.bsky.social
#Italy: Investigation confirmed that journalist Francesco Cancellato was targeted by spyware. This information is “a small, important step towards the truth”, he said. We join Cancellato in calling on 🇮🇹 government and parliament to identify those responsible & ensure and independent investigation.
Referring to @coemediafreedom.bsky.social annual report, which identified #Serbia as one of Europe’s main hotspots for attacks on media freedom in 2025, EFJ President @majasever.bsky.social said that "the jump in attacks, especially after the fall of the canopy in Novi Sad, is really alarming."
Many thanks to Jean-Paul Marthoz @jpmarthoz.bsky.social for the coordination of the Europe Press Freedom Report and to all panelists for presenting the alarming findings and key recommendations. @coemediafreedom.bsky.social
The European Media Freedom Act must be implemented urgently. The deep politicisation and growing capture of the media are putting journalism at risk. Countries such as #Bulgaria are poorly prepared to implement it. Read our alarming findings and recommendations 👇 @coemediafreedom.bsky.social
The shrinking space for independent journalism in #Hungary is also at the heart of this morning's panel discussion. As the 2026 elections approach, the systemic nature of Hungary’s media capture poses a significant threat to pluralistic public debate and democratic accountability. 🧵
A thorough investigation into the use of spyware for surveillance must also be carried out. Serbia, a country marked by severe state repression where independent journalists are labeled as -"terrorists", is of particular concern. 🧵
On the occasion of the publication of the Europe Press Freedom Report, we urge EU Member States to ensure the implementation of the anti-SLAPP Directive. Misuse of legal processes against journalists must also be urgently addressed especially in #Bulgaria and #Serbia🧵@coemediafreedom.bsky.social
"There can be no press freedom without decent working conditions for journalists," said EFJ General Secretary Ricardo Gutiérrez amid increased pressure, 'mob censorship', the massive loss of jobs, and precariousness for freelancers. @molenews1.bsky.social
Journalists covering protests in #Turkey #Serbia and #Georgia are particularly exposed to violence at the hands of law enforcement officers. Women journalists are also increasingly subjected to verbal and physical abuse because of their gender. Those responsible must be brought to justice. 🧵
We are calling for the release of all journalists detained for their work. The protection of journalists in exile must also be urgently strengthened, as must efforts to counter transnational repression. 🧵
To mark the publication of @coemediafreedom.bsky.social annual report, we are holding a panel with a focus on media repression in #Belarus, #Azerbaijan, #Turkey, #Serbia and #Georgia. It is not just a panel, but an even louder call for EU member states to take concrete action at the national level.🧵
Just published! The @coemediafreedom.bsky.social Europe Press Freedom Report is yet another reminder that pressure on journalism continues in 2025, driven by legal threats, physical attacks and intimidation, attempts of media capture and transnational repression.

"Today's black screen is certainly the worst professional challenge for them, even a defeat, although it is the only way to remind the public and institutions of what awaits us all," declared Secretary General of the BH Journalists Association, Borka Rudić. No to black screen!
#Bosnia and #Herzegovina: In recent years, our members, BH Journalists, have repeatedly called on domestic institutions and the EU institutions to get involved in resolving the financial crisis of the public broadcaster BHRT. Urgent action is needed to prevent the imminent shutdown of BHRT. 🧵
#Netherlands: Today the Dutch journalists' union @nvj.nl together with writers' organisations are sending a letter to Meta to demand that the company cease using illegal data sources and offering AI models trained on them in Europe.
As the SafeJournalists Network declared, "Allowing BHRT to collapse due to political inaction would represent a historic failure to uphold democratic standards and media freedom in #Bosnia and #Herzegovina." The right of citizens to access public information must be safeguarded.
We reiterate our calls to the High Representative for #Bosnia and #Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, to urgently use his legal authority to secure a viable solution, given the ongoing absence of an institutional response or political will within BiH institutions. 🧵 @mediafreedomeu.bsky.social
We fully support the journalists and media professionals at Radio Television of #Bosnia and #Herzegovina (BHRT) as they face the imminent threat of shutdown of the public broadcaster due to its long-standing financial crisis and unpaid debts. 🧵
#Italy: 118 press freedom violations recorded in 2025.
On 9–10 March 2026, the MFRR will conduct a follow-up mission to Rome to assess progress and push for key reforms under the European Media Freedom Act: https://ow.ly/pYkE50YhZp5
