We could easily have turned I-64 into a “Parkway Couplet” with Forest Park Pkwy just north of there but the suburbanites in west STL and St Charles counties had more money and got MoDot to rebuild I-64 20 years ago instead. Believe it or not, it was way more dangerous in its 1940’s configuration.

This is now where WWT soccer stadium sits, where the Stan Musial Bridge to Illinois crosses at Tucker Av and where Truman Parkway runs now.

The Gulch was needed to push the freeway through and get the Poplar St Bridge built and they used eminent domain to get mostly Black and Chinese-Americans out of there. There was almost a loop around downtown from the I-44/55 jct north to I-70 along 18/20 sts but it was cancelled in 1984
