I just closed a tab which was next to my Netflix tab and it's advertising, of Bridgerton, "Watch the Season 4 Podcast Now". Have I missed an evolution in language? How do you watch a podcast?

lol. I've only ever traveled between Aus and NZ so I have no clue how I'd react to major timezone changes! when I do make the trip I'm going to be scheduling a lot of resting days between jet lag and chronic illness.

lol admittedly I am not paying for it so it would be possible if I wanted to spend that long on a plane!

Ranger Tom's got two more nests to check, apparently on the way out he stopped for a bit to listen to three male kākāpō chinging and booming under the nearly-full moon, sounds amazing.

oh and he grabbed an oral swab for Nora-A2 for the DNA profile and sex determination as well. not sure how long it will take to get the sex, they haven't given us an update on Vori-A1 but may be waiting to do a whole bunch at once.

Ranger Tom also took a shell sample that was in the nest that they'll run isotrope analysis on as well as soil samples in case of aspergillosis outbreak, touch wood not. Then he ducked back out while saying into the radio "Ground control, this is Ranger Tom."

we put in guesses for the chicks' weights today and I was *spot on* with the younger one - 60g two days ago, 80.63g today. (I didn't do the decimal points). Older one is now 149g.

yeah, I decided to 100% put off my European trip that I've been debating because there's only two ways to get there from NZ - Dubai and Singapore. Singapore's going to be a nightmare now.

A black and white still image of a large parrot in a burrow, sitting on a nest. At least one fluffy chick is visible under her as they're starting to get too big to contain even under her voluminous girth, and the parrot has her head tilted, her gaze seemingly fixed on the ground. One can imagine a blue hooded robe enveloping her, the symbol of the Virgin in medieval religious art.

There’s an Indian journalist in Israel right now reporting in Hindi about how bomb shelters in Israel will allow even the pets of Jews in but will not open its doors to the Indian workers our shithole government sent in droves to make up for genocided Palestinian labor. Apartheid regime.

Tracking the giant residents of the south Taranaki Bight A blue whale research project in the South Taranaki Bight has highlighted the area’s importance to them, and helped with developing an app that tracks their movements.

“Our evidence has clearly shown there are New Zealand Aotearoa blue whales, and the South Taranaki Bight is crucial to them for feeding, breeding and raising their calves."

not that they really want the AI to have rights either because they want it to keep telling them how brilliant they are - which probably tracks with how AI personalities are overwhelmingly coded to present as female.

I'm listening to a content creator rambling about Civ 7 and he said something that I think political parties could really stand to hear. He said, make the game for the people who like it to make it into the best game *for them*. Don't make the game for the people who don't like it to convert them.

Obligatory viral post new followers announce: along with birds and conservation I post about covid, indie video games, local politics, my neighbour's cat who's obsessed with me, social justice, and good things. my education's in social policy and my work experience is in tech and disaster relief.

this is about wanting refunds for illegal tariffs but I do think it would be hilarious if the US govt got sued under those laws that say companies deserve compensation if legal changes increase their costs (usually targeted towards environmental and safety standards)

I used to think a lot about the fact that tigers might be extinct in my lifetime, similarly. New tech is definitely helping conservation work, if they could also get decent funding instead of mostly donations then efforts could even out to less charismatic species as well.

yes, there were something like 130+ fertile eggs so they're into the period where a lot of them are due to hatch all at once right now and numbers are going up fast. the next hurdle is to see how many make it to adulthood but we could potentially see the official population increase to 300+.

haha that'll be kea, they're one of the smartest birds in the world and absolutely notorious for destructive mischief. kākāpō are extremely good climbers though and definitely capable:
