Lebanon’s New President Should Pursue Accountability
On January 9, 2025, Lebanon’s parliament elected military commander Joseph Aoun as president, ending a two-year political deadlock in the country that resulted in a leadership and governance vacuum.
"M.Aoun & le nouveau gouv libanais seront jugés sur leurs actes. Une nouvelle page de l'histoire du Liban ne commencera que lorsque le pays mettra en œuvre un nouveau programme donnant la priorité aux droits plutôt qu'au clientélisme & au copinage" @ramzikaiss.bsky.social www.hrw.org/news/2025/01...

New from @hrw.org on the election of Joseph Aoun as #Lebanon’s new president:
Aoun & the new government will be judged by their actions. A new phase in Lebanon’s history will only begin once it implements an agenda that prioritizes rights over patronage & cronyism

Lebanon’s deportation of poet AbdulRahman al-Qardawi to the UAE today brazenly violates Lebanese & international law.
He now faces serious risks of abuse, including torture.
A shameful, dangerous & unlawful action by Lebanon’s government.

Israel’s Crime of Extermination, Acts of Genocide in Gaza

The Israeli govt has deliberately denied Palestinians in Gaza the bare minimum water needed to survive. This policy of deprivation, resulting in thousands of deaths,
is nothing short of the crime against humanity of extermination, and an act of genocide. www.hrw.org/news/2024/12...

In Beirut today, one person I interviewed had his home destroyed.
His family was unhurt because his mother was already in the hospital.
As he swept the dust from the now exposed stairwell, he said that his thoughts were with Gaza.
“We haven’t experienced 1% of what Gaza has,” he told me.
