I would just start asking them questions about something that they’ve learned lately or are excited about and keep asking more about it

I think it depends on the intent, are you trying to convince others they should be interested in what you like? Or looking to have a genuine exchange of interests? Only the latter works and the other party needs to be in the right mood to be invested in something new
