Nepal's Gen Z Used TikTok and Discord to Win a Historic Election The election of rapper-turned politician Balen Shah was shaped by platforms and algorithms built on the other side of the world, writes Aaradhyaa Gyawali.

Did you know that Nepal had a high-stakes election last week? That the backstory involved Discord, a youth movement, and a rapper-turned-politician? I didn't - at least until a student of mine told me. She wrote it up for others to learn too: www.techpolicy.press/nepals-gen-z...

I have been trying to figure out how to concisely write down the "person in an ugly shirt" test, but I started it when talking to ppl about "kink at Pride" but it works for a lot of things.

And no, this exercise won't work on every person, but it has helped me get ppl's heads wrapped around...

as an aside, what's struck me in all the stories coming out about AI psychosis is how far it ripples. these systems aren't hurting one person at a time; they're destroying friendships and families, putting intense labor onto regular people who are not equipped to handle serious psychiatric episodes

see, this is why the only inputs are code and money.

How to Talk to Someone Experiencing 'AI Psychosis' Mental health experts say identifying when someone is in need of help is the first step — and approaching them with careful compassion is the hardest, most essential part that follows.

it turns out that the answer to the headline here is: like humans. listen. don't judge, but don't endorse the beliefs, either.

as my friend wisely said: “There's value in having friendships where it's like, ‘I love you, but also, you're full of shit.’” www.404media.co/ai-psychosis...

there's a payment system in Japan where you make a purchase online and a code is generated. you take that code and go to your local konbini, punch the code into a payment terminal there.

same general concept would work fine. commerce happens, but paypro doesn't see what was paid for, no crypto.

The great Telegram NSFW purge has re-awakened my idea for a self-hosted no-code OF/JFF alternative for creators. Somebody who's better at code than me should look into this.

Maybe they relied on AI to pick targets. But they bombed the school twice, hitting it again 40 minutes after the initial strike, in order to kill survivors and first responders. The mere *existence* of AI means no one has to be held responsible for this crime against humanity

It was several things but partly I was in ministry and people came to me to talk and I felt I couldn't ignore the hard questions. Like people get into annoying word games around this but at the end of the day what do you feel ok telling someone is the truth? I felt too much responsibility to others.

The moms risking arrest to protect gender-affirming care for trans youth The government wants to ban the care nationwide. Hospitals are shutting down treatment. Parents just want it all to stop.

Larissa, a therapist from D.C., recently spent 12 hours in a jail cell with five other people. There was no running water, since the sink wasn’t working. They were all fed once: a baloney sandwich per person.

She was there for her trans patients. They're being hurt by this administration, she said.

Call Mayor Frey today at 612-673-2100 and tell him to sign Pause Evictions, Save Lives.

We fought to keep our immigrant neighbors here—now we need to keep them in their homes. No family should be punished for hiding from ICE by now being evicted.

“AI psychosis” is not a clinical term, and for mental health professionals, it’s a loaded one. Torous told me there are three ways to think about the phenomenon as clinicians are seeing it currently. Recent research shows about one in eight adolescents and young adults in the US use AI chatbots for mental health advice, most commonly among ages 18 to 21. For most people with psychiatric disorders, onset happens in adolescence, before their mid-20s. But there have been cases that break this mold: In 2023, a man in his 50s who otherwise led a normal, stable life, bought a pair of AI chatbot-embedded Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses “which he says opened the door to a six-month delusional spiral that played out across Meta platforms through extensive interactions with the company’s AI, culminating in him making dangerous journeys into the desert to await alien visitors and believing he was tasked with ushering forth a ‘new dawn’ for humanity,” Futurism reported.

“It makes sense that a lot of people who are developing a psychotic illness for the first time, there's going to be this horrible coincidence, or kind of correlation,” Torous said. “In some cases the AI is the object of people's delusions and hallucinations.”

as with much in the psychiatry field, the topic is highly nuanced and consensus on the usefulness of the phrase itself, let alone diagnosability, is still being worked out.

in the meantime, people are experiencing undeniably life-altering crises after using chatbots www.404media.co/ai-psychosis...

Ahead of 2028, Sen. Cory Booker to unveil bill to make $75,000 in income tax-free The bill is a marker for the next time Democrats get a chance to rewrite the tax code. The New Jersey senator told NBC News he's keeping the door open to a 2028 presidential bid.

At first glance this idea may SOUND good, but the truth is that no poor person will benefit from it, middle class people will benefit from it only marginally, but the well-to-do would benefit substantially. This is a perverse policy disguised as a middle class cut

Bumping a 19-day-old-thread with another great example of the Knight Boat Principle.

Why does Ace Combat 7 have a penal unit where prisoners fly armed warplanes? Because it's a game about flying armed warplanes, and if your character went to regular no-planes jail you wouldn't be able to do that.

Small-town police logs are a great reminder that we could probably significantly cut the budgets of many departments. And also that people need to mind their own damn business.

Why now is the time to be loudly anti-war We don't need the clarity of hindsight to know war in Iran—or anywhere—will end in physical, moral and financial ruin.

New — My case for why it’s not enough to call this “Trump’s war” when violence abroad implicates us all, and how we don’t need hindsight to know that unequivocally opposing this war will be the correct (and only morally defensible) choice:

If an official commits an impeachable offense and nobody acts to impeach, it is no longer an impeachable offense.

People who oppose impeachment as “pointless” because it seems unlikely to result in removal do not understand this very simple point and seem unwilling to even try to understand it.

No Democrat should vote to fund Trump’s illegal war. Let your Members of Congress know you’re paying attention — demand that they oppose any supplemental funding package.

It's normal to restrict or move away from treatments when evidence of harms starts to outweigh evidence of benefits.

It's not normal to restrict or move away from treatments when there is evidence of benefits and none of harms, even if the evidence of benefits is "low quality."

True redemption doesn’t usually involve an increase in power and influence for those redeemed, and we should be wary of those who try to gain those privileges from a pose of repentance.

Medical transition for trans kids is now banned for new referrals on the NHS. Trans kids in the UK can still go private or DIY (for now).

This means the new clinics that replaced GIDS are close to useless at best, conversion therapy at worst. 1/5
