Being Mayor of Saanich has been the honour of my life. I love this community. I’ve spent the last 25 years trying to improve it—in office and as a volunteer.
Thank you for the extraordinary gift of being your mayor. I will carry that honour with me for the rest of my life.

Your council has been focused on the priorities you told us are most important to you:
✔️Creating homes that families can afford in walkable and accessible
neighbourhoods.
✔️ Adding to the vibrancy of neighbourhoods where parks, schools and services are accessible on foot and bike.

In Saanich, we’re focused on creating homes that people can afford.
Saanich’s latest housing report shows that fully half of development permits issued this year were for non-market, affordable units.

That means creating a range of housing options like duplexes, triplexes, townhouses, apartments, condos, and more single-family homes so everybody can find a home that meets their needs and their budget in Saanich.

That doesn’t mean taking away homes or qualify of life from those who built a life here and raised a family.
It means protecting and enhancing the things that we love in our neighbourhoods, while giving more individuals and families the chance to put down roots here.

Vancouver's popular pop-up plazas becoming permanent fixtures
Plazas and public spaces: what are we getting right, and where are we going wrong?
"More than just a way to address social isolation and remedy cultural disconnection, [Vancouver's] plazas could become a blueprint for more people-friendly outdoor infrastructure."

I am deeply saddened to hear of the serious collision involving a cyclist near the Lochside Trail crossing on Quadra Street. My thoughts are with the injured cyclist and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
As Mayor, road safety is one of my top priorities. Everyone should feel safe whether they’re walking, cycling, or driving in our community. This incident is a stark reminder of the work still ahead to ensure our roads are truly safe for all users.
I spoke with staff, who will be identifying additional safety improvements for this busy and well-used crossing. We are committed to making the necessary changes — in policy, design, and culture — to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.
I want to thank the Saanich Police Major Crime Unit for their swift response and thorough investigation. I encourage anyone with dashcam footage or information to come forward to assist their efforts.
Everyone should feel safe whether they’re walking, cycling, or driving in our community. This incident is a stark reminder of the work still ahead to ensure our roads are truly safe for all users.

A statement from Mayor Dean Murdock about respectful engagement in response to recent incidents of hostility, intimidation and verbal abuse at Council meeting.
The Quadra McKenzie planning process is our opportunity to come together to build a plan that reflects the hopes and needs of our entire community. Let’s make sure the process reflects the values we all hold as Saanich residents: respect, inclusion, and care for one another.

Just to be explicitly clear, the public can still write and call council members but at the meeting on the 24th, no more public input will be permitted live in council chambers

After hearing from ~86 people (thank you all for the input) from 6-11:15pm Tuesday, we voted to postpone consideration of the revised report the on Quadra-McKenzie Plan in #Saanich until Feb 24 when we will answer all the public’s questions and then debate the matter.
