Looks like I’ll be in Anchorage for a couple of days this July (for a friend’s wedding)! Any suggestions for what-not-to-miss?
I’ll have with me:
A 6 month old baby
A rental car probably
A keen interest in local culture, especially craft, and local ecology

After Trump Officials Cut Food Aid to Kenya, Children Starved to Death
“Brutal and traumatizing”: Interviews and a trove of internal documents show government officials and aid workers desperately tried to warn Trump advisers about impending disaster and death.
Secretary Marco Rubio claimed no one died as a result of cuts to USAID. That’s not what we found.
After Trump officials cut food aid to Kenya, children starved to death in an American-made hunger crisis.

Spilling out some limpet facts until people know about limpetization, ep. 01 :
Limpet teeth are the strongest biological material ever tested.
Nanofibers embedded in a protein matrix, they outperform Kevlar, spider silk, and even rivaling the best synthetic carbon fibers.

A screenshot of Rachel Dratch from SNL. She's a white woman with short dark hair and blue eyes, and she's making an awkward expression that implies, "Sorry I have to tell you this and ruin your good time. But also I'm kind of not sorry about it." I've added a subtitle that reads, "That's AI."
an updated debbie downer sketch but it's friends showing her funny videos and she has to respond like this to every single one like this:

Hello! I’m the reporter who has been tracking citizens detained by immigration agents. And last night, I noticed something: A lot of them were at the State of the Union, including a number of whom I’ve written about.
Their stories should be known:

Photo of a hand holding up a card that features a painting of a keenly focused black bird, probably a crow (?) against a moody brown background. Light on the bird’s feathers carves out each individual plume
Particularly in love with this beauty. Yayyyyy arttttt

Photo of a hand holding a brown paper-wrapped package tied with a piece of rough twine. The package has a business card taped to it, partially obscured by the twine but it features a painting of a wolf. In the background a window and a blue curtain in front of a blue sky
🎶 These are a few of my favorite things! 🎶
(Just got a lil brown paper package tied up with string from @esthervanhulsen.bsky.social full of *gorgeous* bird art, congratulations to me and anyone getting mail from me I the next several months that will include the prettiest card!!)

Really glad my baby doesn’t develop language *before* learning to burp on her own, because I might have to restrain my fits of giggles and chants of “Hell yeah! Hell yeah!” when we get a particularly tuneful belch out of her tiny little body

Erin thank you for asking lmao, I am launching a pint-glass-mediated native plant education project. I just got the glasses yesterday and delivered the first 17 cases today 😅 they’re going to bars all over the city to try to reach people who would not seek at this kind of information online

I ran out of interesting books in my middle school library so the librarian started teaching me to add things to the catalog and repair some of the older books with rickety spines. I like words and I don’t use genAI for anything.

My very kind drivers ed instructor spent the first two lessons hyping up his son to me and then sent his son to teach my third and final lesson. I was 16. He was probably 25 and VERY embarrassed that his dad was trying to set us up via driving lesson meet-cute
I liked them both but not Like That

very good explanation of why not to feed images into an image generator, especially when memorializing children after a devastating tragedy.
better not to use image generators at all.

a slide with 3 pictures of schools with brightly colored murals stacked on top of one another under the words "Schools in service area". On the other side of the slide, a blank wall of a school under the label "Our partner"
Alright bsky science + art community, I need your help.
I was p confident we could get a grant to fund our upcoming biodiversity mural in Kensington. Last night, they called to say our partner school is 2 blocks outside of their service area.
But ya know what? We're gonna do it anyway.

A reasonable guess but the puffins are Atlantic! So I was assuming the dolphins were too, but 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
Honestly I found the artist on Instagram, maybe I should just ask her…

I saw a little gray baby beluga at the Vancouver Aquarium when I was a kid! Lost my dang mind. Someday I’ll see them in the wild 🤞🏼

Photo of a children’s book, Raffi’s Baby Beluga to be specific, illustrated by Ashley Wolff in a bright maybe gouache style. The image shows ice, an Atlantic puffin, a leaping beluga whale, and a group of five black, white, and gray dolphins with rounded faces
Anyone know what dolphin species these are meant to be? I’m assuming they’re lags of some sort but am not super familiar with Arctic species! #marinebio #cetaceans
