I'm looking for postdoc positions in freshwater biogeochemistry! Interested in any projects investigating nutrient and carbon cycling, phytoplankton coupling with dissolved organic matter cycling in human-altered landscapes, or hydrology and spatial modeling!

Fate and transport of environmental DNA: mapping the knowns and unknowns
The use of environmental DNA (eDNA) in routine biomonitoring is transforming our ability to detect and quantify aquatic species. However, translating these indirect molecular detections into ecologica...
Wouldnβt it be kind of wild if someone actually pulled everything we know about what happens to eDNA between shedding and detection?
Decay, transport, microbes, temperature, rivers, oceans, all of it?!
We did that.

This difference meant there was an increase in the proportion of the eDNA sample made up of small particles as we moved "downstream". More evidence that eDNA removal in streams is an interplay of physical and biotic factors. And this can be influenced by temp!

So what did we find?
At higher temps, small eDNA particles (0.2β1.0βΞΌm), were removed faster than at lower temps, while removal rates were consistent across temps for larger eDNA particles (>1.0βΞΌm).

Abagael Pruitt and Elise (Ellie) Snyder smiling for the camera while collecting an eDNA water sample from one of twenty-four indoor, recirculating mesocosms.
We conditioned these handy recirculating mesocosms (at #NotreDame) under a range of temperatures. Then we added #eDNA from from two fish species and and took H2O samples over time to measure removal rates for different eDNA sizes. SO to @abagaelpruitt.bsky.social letting me use her experiment setup!

Comparing the Fate of eDNA by Particle Sizes and Molecule Lengths in Recirculating Streams
The detection of environmental DNA (eDNA) has revolutionized aquatic species monitoring, yet interpreting eDNA data remains challenging due to gaps in our understanding of eDNA ecology (i.e., origin,...

What happens to different eDNA components in water? ππ§
We tested particle size (small vs. large) and DNA molecule length (86 vs. 387 bp) in recirculating streamsβand what we found might surprise you! π§΅π
