Yep, I hear you. Honestly, I think it can go either way. A lot of artists are insecure. When they downplay their art like that, it throws up a wall; protects them against criticism. That said, a lot of people just use that tactic to fish for compliments; nothing deeper to it. 50/50 tossup
Artists will post the most stunning paintings you've ever seen, wait a few months, nuke all of their accounts from orbit, and disappear off the face of the internet forever. Wack

I think the biggest damage to the art community was the obsolescence of gallery sites (y!, deviantart, etc) and the rise of scroll-by social media, like twitter and even tumblr. Art is not ''content'', you shouldnt need to post art every day (or every month!) to be relevant. This mindset sucks.
