The floor speeches from House Republicans have reached congressional levels of absurdity. We've heard about posses, volcanoes, and divorces tonight.

We already have an RCW (state statute) prescribing qualifications for sheriff.
It was enacted in 1979 and it remains in force.
The Legislature has the power to prescribe duties for sheriffs, to provide for their elections, etc. And it has done so. 5974 is simply an update to well established law.

The Republicans have invoked the Washington State Constitution at least a hundred times tonight.

We are only a couple amendments into the floor debate.
This could go on for a long, long time.
The Republicans are putting up tons of speakers on every amendment and forcing verbal roll calls to make it as painful as possible. The House is going to burn a lot of floor time on 5974. It's worth it.

The House can choose not to concur in any Senate amendments. It can ask the Senate to recede from its amendments.
The Senate can then either back down or insist on its position.
