If the work is meaningless, if it's not relevant, if it feels unconnected to the real problems in their world...truly, why should they care? (I know not all those problems are in the realm of teacher decision-making. We need a full system change baby!)

In my experience, "unmotivated" is so so rarely the case.

And! When it is! Kids are so right to be unmotivated, so much of the time.

We are way too quick to ascribe students with a "lack of motivation." It takes much less vulnerability to say "I don't wanna" than it does to say "I don't actually understand this" or "I don't know how to do this" or "I am just trying to make it through the day."
