What if your TEM could run #microED and solve structures on its own?
Just insert your sampleβwatch the structure appear.
No human picks. No manual tweaks.

Screenshot of a google search result with the AI Overview opining on how eels can use magnetite for directional sensing.
Not the eels I was looking for google!!
I've definitely been guilty of a bit of vegetative electron microscopy, those late night elemental maps on an old LaB6 'scope definitely warranted a few naps between drift correction stage bumps. Not sure if I'd brag about them in the method section though. retractionwatch.com/2025/02/10/v...
My favourite view of the microscope π¬, with it's pants off!! This is a JEOL F200 transmission electron microscope (TEM) and under the table you can see the CMOS camera made by Gatan which we use for imaging and 4D STEM!
Having a color-blind colleague is a good reminder that we need to be more careful when designing figures for scientific publication π§ͺ
My lab has found this page especially useful for selecting color palettes, used in combination with different symbols: thenode.biologists.com/data-visuali...
π£ JOB ALERTπ£ Our UNSW Sydney facility is looking for a Technical Officer (to Jan 2026) to support bio/cryo sample prep and SEM/TEM user training. Join a lovely team in a busy core facility that specialises in electron microscopy!

Australian in-laws will tease you forever if you call them a red belly black spider....
I have just realised that the nursery rhyme about 5 little pigs that went to market is more about making sausages than it is about having little adventures.

Thanks Jamie! The energy spread is tied up in the "focal spread" variable for simplicity, but maybe V2 will expand that out and have more adjustable variables...
I've started the roll out of some interactive tools for electron microscopy on my website, the first of these to be released is an interactive Contrast Transfer Function plotter: rfwebster.net/tools/CTF useful for understanding the resolution and contrast in your HRTEM images!
Making a new website with react... Watch this space for something simple but hopefully useful to the microanalyst...

Got to ride a different light rail line to work today!
Today I learnt that an Australian (cape) gooseberry is different to an English one.

Benefits of having an Australian wife and not personally being allowed to vote in the country I live: democracy sausage!
Just going to throw this around - what if any company making over $1b/yr had to pay 50%. How would Coles and Woolies survive?
It was nice of Dell to include this free hand warmer, but I wish there was also one for my right (mouse wielding) hand!
Beginning to like this AI drawing thing!

I'm struggling to read this any other way than: Quantas profits drop because they stopped overcharging.
