I have followed your exact trajectory on the same timeline and I am coming to the same conclusions—so well put. That doesn’t mean much coming from me except I personally feel a little better than I did a few minutes ago. My main hang up is: I need this to be true, and so I may be unreliable.

I don’t understand the point of this thread. I made it because I want agents I use to be able to write prose that I find more pleasant when I have to read it. I was not being coy. It was lazily derived from a Wikipedia page. It doesn’t work that well. I did not open Pandora’s box.

Even the most tapped-in professors I follow on here do not engage with why they have students.
The thing that will prevent universities from meaningfully anticipating the existential impact and threat of AI to them is that professors refuse to acknowledge that, in the United States, a university education is a government-subsidized job certification program for knowledge work.
At what threshold of utility does one need to consider what is even the point of evaluating student performance? For example, if you’re a computer science professor, none of your students will end up being employed in the industry, so who cares?
