If I'm Russia, I'm thrilled with this move. It takes whatever US attention was left on Ukraine away and puts in on Iran, so they operate with virtually no resistance from us.
It also removes all credibility from America to lecture them about foreign intervention.
During previous military adventurism, by either US party, I've said something like "hope this goes well, despite it being an awful thing." I continue to wish only the best to our active duty personnel; this is unlikely to end in anything better than the previous status quo.
What a complete waste.
