I come from a long lineage of people who have found ways to live in terrible times, to fight to survive while refusing to lose themselves.

my sleep troubles have been back the last month or so. i made this piece for the parts of me that like to remember that while it’s true that our world is fraught with hard parts and bad news, i am also, in this moment, safe enough to rest. i hope you are too 🤍

i’ve been thinking about how sleep is one of the most vulnerable things we do. how we must become quiet and soft and unaware, taking the world as a it is.

This is not looking for the bright side; it’s not making the best — it’s just continuing to live with our pain. When we do, it’s possible for our lives to grow around it.

But then I tried to welcome a life that could cohabitate with the difficulties.

It’s a different life, but it’s mine, and it holds more than I had before. For example, now I’ve been able to meet you, sweet stranger-friends, and we have all these paintings for our feelings. (2/3)

When hard things don’t recede, I am learning to build out a life around them.

This is even how I began making art — I was sick, and when my life was all out-of-the-house, up-and-around stuff, the pain seemed to stop everything. (1/3)
