My advice has been “if you go into a 1:1 during your interview and someone has picked a paper from your CV to discuss in detail, you want to be proud of it” (in part because I saw my adviser do that)

The thing is that full unfettered impoundment authority is effective authority to threaten and coerce a bunch of action you don’t have legal authority to compel. Unilateral impoundment authority is destruction of the rule of law.
