and I found myself thinking that none of those things make turn-based RPGs truly great to me, and that many of my favorites have a very standard, Dragon Quest-derivative core system, where what's actually special is the game being full of tense, exciting encounter design from beginning to end

and I think the reason some hardcore shmup players ended up a bit resentful is because in their eyes there are other shmups that are just impeccably designed from beginning to end, but because they don't have that "hook", that one thing you can easily describe as the unique core, they get overlooked

watched an Ikaruga 1CC last night as I went to bed and it got me thinking about that game's place in slightly more mainstream discourse when it came out compared to its genre contemporaries, and I think it's a product of a bigger trend in how we talk game design, namely our desire for a "hook"
