I support Proton, I know what you mean in your defense... but @404media.co IS trusted... its NOT a click bait headline. Its accurate...

Focus on teaching folks how to pay for your services in the most secure means possible... You have some GREAT documentation that helps with this. Promote that!

RSVP for Outrunning the Surveillance State: Choosing Safe Software Alternatives Sign up to join us on Tuesday, March 10, at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT. We’ll send you an email with the event link.

On March 10, digital security specialist Robert Flummerfelt will discuss safer alternatives to "big tech" cloud services, communications software, operating systems, and more.

🧡 The ever-wise @bennjordan.bsky.social lays out an even-handed, clear articulation of why @proton.me’s defensive posture makes them less trustworthy and a way they could make their service more anonymous for paying users. ( @mullvad.bsky.social already does this.)

Perfectly captures the move that @proton.me could have made here that would make them more trustworthy.

The best option for most people isn’t β€œliterally the most secure thing possible” because those tools usually trade-off user friendliness for increased security. Proton is reasonably secure and still very user friendly. And everything is encrypted so they do not have the ability to see your content.

Congress Is Considering Abolishing Your Right to Be Anonymous Online The bipartisan push to remove anonymity from the internet is ushering in an era of unprecedented mass surveillance and censorship.

You should be able to criticize your government anonymously online.

Full stop.

"Age verification" legislation is just a pretty name for "forced online ID checks," meaning everything you post is associated with your government name

We have to stop this.

it sucks this happened, but i wouldn't ditch proton specifically over this. if you don't want to leave traces of payment metadata, you can stuff cash in an envelop, write your account number on it, and mail it to switzerland.

I still think Proton is a better option than Gmail/Google Docs or most other doc/email platforms for most people doing any kind of organizing.

If your threat model requires complete anonymity (that’s not most of us), don’t pay for things with a credit card and always ALWAYS use a VPN

06.03.2026 16:27 πŸ‘ 23 πŸ” 2 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

🧡 Worth adding: even though we think Proton is still a strong choice for many activists, the company sucks. Their response is dismal (as @bennjordan.bsky.social points out below). They are covering their ass and not demonstrating commitment to the cause of privacy.

This is ridiculous, @protonprivacy.bsky.social.

You gave up the identity of a customer (as required by law) via an FBI request. You could be writing a guide on how customers can help prevent this from happening again, not frivolously attacking the integrity of a nonprofit journalism organization.

CryptPad: end-to-end encrypted collaboration suite CryptPad: end-to-end encrypted collaboration suite

🧡 cryptpad.fr is our best alternative for document editing. It's end-to-end encrypted and hosted by values-aligned folks. But (as stated earlier) it is a pain in the ass to use a lot of the time. The biggest feature benefit over Proton Docs is that you can set self-destruction dates on docs.

Home - riseup.net Riseup provides online communication tools for people and groups working on liberatory social change. We are a project to create democratic alternatives and practice self-determination by controlling ...

🧡 RiseUp.net is a great option for activist-aligned email. (Ask around in your network for an invite code.) They are likely to push back against a warrant and gag order. The downside is, if they don't succeed, they will have the ability to turn over you the data itself.

05.03.2026 23:53 πŸ‘ 22 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

🧡 At the end of the day, security and usability are often a trade-off. We built Activist Checklist for non-technical users. We hear from them all the time about how much work even basic privacy/security steps are. Proton is the right choice for many projects when you need to protect the data.

May First Movement Technology

🧡 What should you do? If you are able to self-host your email and docs, go for it (see Co-op Cloud). If not, check out May First for movement aligned email. It’s not end-to-end encrypted, but they are more likely to fight a subpoena or warrant. mayfirst.coop/en/

05.03.2026 23:23 πŸ‘ 22 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

🧡 Who should NOT be using Proton (or any other 3rd party provider): If you need full anonymity. If you are doing work that has a high likelihood of being the target of a government investigation and the metadata alone (payment information, IP address, access time) could be used against you.

05.03.2026 23:21 πŸ‘ 25 πŸ” 2 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0
The Co-op Cloud

🧡 We need to invest in these tools if we’re going to get them to a point where they are usable. Co-op Cloud is one such project that is trying to get β€œone click” recipes for common activist infrastructure: coopcloud.tech

05.03.2026 23:17 πŸ‘ 29 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

🧡 The long-term solution: we need self-hosted infrastructure run by people in your movement circles. You host email/docs for your people. If they get a subpoena, they're more motivated to fight it than a random provider β€” you share values and goals.

05.03.2026 23:16 πŸ‘ 36 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

🧡 Reason 3 - You can still be anonymous on Proton if you do the following: Always use a VPN (like Mullvad). Don’t enter a real phone number or secondary email address (use SMSPool.net to rent a phone number for a minute). Don’t pay for Proton, or use anonymous crypto (Monero) if you really need to.

05.03.2026 23:16 πŸ‘ 32 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

🧡 Reason 2: Usability. Proton is the most user-friendly encrypted email/docs/sheets tool available. Security and usability are a tradeoff. Ask people to use something painful (like Cryptpad) and they'll go back to Google. Which is much worse.

05.03.2026 23:16 πŸ‘ 38 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

🧡 So why still consider Proton?

Reason 1: The content of your emails and docs CANNOT be handed over. It's end-to-end encrypted. For many people, the goal isn't full anonymity (which is hard anyway). It's keeping communications private. Which Proton still does. They have never handed over content.

05.03.2026 23:15 πŸ‘ 49 πŸ” 8 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

🧡 It’s easy to say β€œthis company turned data over to the cops, we can’t trust them.” But the unfortunate truth is that ANY COMPANY will turn over data to cops under the right legal pressure. Switzerland has a legal assistance treaty with the US. Proton has to comply with Swiss law.

05.03.2026 23:14 πŸ‘ 50 πŸ” 5 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

🧡 Today’s news: Proton turned over payment info for a Stop Cop City account. Not good β€” it's state repression in action.

Controversial opinion: We don't think this means all activists should abandon Proton for docs/email.

It depends on your threat model. Let's explore.

(Long thread incoming πŸ‘‡)

Using adblockers such as privacy badger or ublock origin is a necessary step, not just for privacy but for safety!

It's important that we hold risks like this in the context of the larger fight. It's easy to see security risks and start to "get small" but the true value in movement security/safety work is to use those protections to help us organize and "get big" in our actions. Which includes taking risks.
