And also it's usually not only masking that makes social interactions draining, there's also the aspect of having to force ur brain to process neurotypical language and tones which drain a lot of processing power. Add masking on top of that and ur literally draining ur energy like crazy.

And not only does it cause burnout, I've had a friend who's therapist for years didn't notice she was autistic and had her go through masking type therapies, this caused her to get chronical pains, almost become physically unable to walk and she forgot how to drive.

Thats why a lot of autistic people cannot handle ABA therapy, the methodology of ABA relies on masking for the patient to seem like they fit in better, but for the autistic patient it can cause burnout in the long term

Also fyi: masking can cause more than just draining social battery (although in actuality the social battery is executive functioning) the drainage of executive functioning can in the wkrst cases cause autistic burnout (you lose a skill you learnt eg: walking) and in better caes dissociation
