They break open at the perfect time, there's a number of science papers on them that show they greatly improve germination, primarily by deterring seed predators and such. I love to toss them into little neglected areas to create pollinator habitat

You just gotta toss them into an area you want flowers to grow and nature does the rest with water and sunshine! They were taught to me as a "do nothing farming" technique.
