Somalia | At sunset during Ramadan, families gather to break the fast. For many detainees, those moments pass far from home. In Somalia, nearly 5,000 detainees in 11 places of detention receive food through our annual Ramadan distribution, helping bring a familiar moment of the month closer.

Humanitarian pauses, corridors, ceasefires… are they defined by international humanitarian law?

Whatever the term used, warring parties have obligations to protect civilians and aid workers.

Access to safe water can be life-saving, especially in times of drought. In Ilix village, we rehabilitated this borehole as part of a wider effort that has reached over half a million people, and our work continues in drought-affected communities.

Students, teachers and schools should always be protected in armed conflict.

Students, teachers and schools should always be protected in armed conflict.

πŸŽ’ Students are civilians.
✏️ Teachers are too.
🏫 Schools are civilian buildings.

All of them are protected by the rules of war.

Even wars have limits. Always.

"Widening hostilities across the Middle East are putting civilian lives in grave danger. The scale of major military operations flaring across the Middle East risks embroiling the region – and beyond – into another large-scale armed conflict that will overwhelm any humanitarian response. Without urgent steps to de-escalate the situation and respect the rules of war, further civilian lives will be lost. Civilians are already suffering the consequences of war. All parties to armed conflict have an obligation to uphold the rules of war, which are unequivocal. Civilians and civilian infrastructure must be spared from hostilities. Schools must remain sanctuaries for learning where children can feel safe and protected from attacks, and hospitals must remain sanctuaries for saving lives. Medical personnel and first responders, such as the Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies, must be protected in all circumstances and be able to carry out their work safely. All parties must allow and facilitate safe and unrestricted access for impartial humanitarian assistance to reach those in need."

Not every means or method of warfare is permitted.

Under IHL, the use of herbicides is prohibited when it risks disproportionate civilian harm, targets non-military objects, or causes severe environmental damage.

Civilians, the wounded and others not – or no longer – taking part in the fighting must be protected, and humanitarian assistance must reach all those affected. Hospitals must be able to operate and access to essential services must be guaranteed. Today, we supported the repatriation of human remains of fallen soldiers between Russia and Ukraine, as agreed by the parties. This marks the 62nd operation of its kind since 2022. Repatriations are a vital step towards identifying the deceased and bringing long-awaited answers to families left in uncertainty. Though receiving confirmation of death is devastating, it gives families the chance to mourn, honor, and lay their relatives to rest with dignity. We remain prepared to continue supporting this humanitarian effort. Families have the right to know the fate of their missing loved ones.

Water and habitat When conflict impedes access to clean water, safe shelter or a sustainable living environment, the consequences are severe and far-reaching.

πŸ’§ Water is life, but in war, it is often a casualty.

Too often, armed conflicts damage infrastructure, disrupt supplies, prevent operators from working, and spread disease through contamination.

Without water, entire communities are at risk.
