excellent news, thanks Mark
excellent news, thanks Mark
Really enjoyed this seminar from @drrostireadioff.bsky.social in our Musculoskeletal Biomechanics MSc @msc-mubm.bsky.social. She's doing such cool work linkingbiology and engineering...left with lots of new ideas!
Thanks @acsharp.bsky.social for hosting, and Rosti for letting me share this :)
Is it particularly thick, or does it just look like that in photos/video because it's short and wide?
Or maybe the paper is just a coincidence...
Office 365 and Linux β trying to use Linux when your organization is all in and locked down withΒ Microsoft
The problem - my employer is all in on Microsoft 365. They have flipped the admin switches that mean email can only be checked via Outlook (or Apple Mail, because executives like Apple, Iβ¦
Right, that's it, I'm uninstalling all of Autodesk's tendrils from my computer. Crappy, slow, terrible Maya hasn't been needed in over a year now - all scientific workflows moved to #blender
I've discovered Semantic Scholar as an alternative to google scholar. Seems good. Does bluesky have opinions?

My last post was about trying out Bazzite. I'd installed it to an external SSD and gave it a good go for a few days as my main OS. It was a bit of a faff, needing to carry around the SSD with the laptopβ¦

Penetrative track morphology and sediment parameters: subsurface layers are robust to changes in substrate properties royalsocietypublishing.org/rsif/article... | #JRSocInterface #Biomechanics #Fossil
Whilst that is a _superb_ pun, I maintain... No Fun!
And in direct opposition to the above:, terrible, terrible title: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Which fossil? How does it re-write it? Which is the baffling clade?
depends what the conclusion is I guess!
When you have a deep, penetrative track, it turns out that sediment properties don't really affect the sub-surface morphology very much (for a given foot motion). This is good news for reconstructing #dinosaur foot motions from penetrative tracks: royalsocietypublishing.org/rsif/article...
Whatever you may think about this paper, it's a bloody masterclass in how to title a paper. I immediately know the subject and the conclusion.
#DownWithDumbPunsAndColonsInTitles
One of the problems with these trendy gaming distros is that the subreddits have become useless for tech support because they're just full of people posting 'Left Windows behind and couldn't be happier!' with a screenshot of their generic desktop.
Also, getting a temporary drop to black screen after logging in. Looks like on this Asus laptop (Proart P16), nvidia goes to gpu 0 and amd igpu to gpu1, which is making power/sleep/wake screwy. Can't find a way to fix.
Gonna move to #CachyOS for a few days and see if that plays out better
Ok, so I installed #bazzite and ran it is my main OS for a while.
Touchpad scrolling way too sensitive (common problem on wayland/gnome I think), but can't fix it with libinput-config because immutable system. Bummer
finally a phone without a camera bump!
Caveats apply - assumptions of tax bands staying the same (woo! fiscal drag!). But also not accounting for lecturers having to pay back student loans and pay council tax etc.
UKRI increased the PhD stipend again by 4.6% this year. Good. But worth noting that lecturers received a 1% pay rise this year (pay cut in real terms). Given stipend is tax free it would, according to some dodgy maths I did, take 10 years until PhD students take home more than a starting lecturer.
Addendum:
Forgot OpenSuse Tumbleweed: What the hell is that installer? 1995 called and they want their UI back. Genuinely felt worried I might accidentally blow away the wrong drive.
#aeon: Dev believes security chain is important, so impossible to install to external SSD or dual boot, so can't try it despite it looking like everything I want.
#CachyOS: So much faff and needlessly technical setup (and I am a technical person)
*sigh* ...linux...
Update to my #linux journey. After enjoying #Bazzite, but failing to solve HDR in games, and realizing the devs are quite antagonistic to Nvidia (mixed feelings here), I tried:
#nobara: First update broke the system irrevocably.

Productive afternoon in @livuni-ilcams.bsky.social weekly seminar practicing sketchnoting and learning a little bit about cardiophysiology :)
Thanks to @rainbowlabuol.bsky.social for explaining his work so well and letting me share it.
Trying to resolve something with currys, I became exasperated at the stonewalling and delaying of their web chat, so I turned to Twitter. This is going swell...
In March, we welcome Dr Ariel Camp from @livuni-ilcams.bsky.social to @chesterscibar.bsky.social to tell us what all the puff is about pufferfish. See you @StoryhouseLive on Tuesday 10th March at 7.30. #chester

So different OS, different DE, and a different launcher? Linux in a nutshell.
Is that with Nvidia, or do I also need a different GPU? :)
But seriously, thanks, I'll take a look when I get chance. I did try those launch options with no luck in bazzite/gnome
