My brief essay in this is called "The Art of Writing Lore," and it's about how to take those codex/encyclopedia entries to the next level.
In the past few days many talented Writers + Narrative Designers from across our industry have been sharing their involvement in The Game Narrative Kaleidoscope project - 100+ essays all exploring the art and craft of game narrative, organised by Jon Ingold.

Look what arrived. I opened it a random and landed on my article lol π€©
Who would @darbymcdevitt.bsky.social, writer of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, say was the villain in that game?

Book is out!
What a pleasure to be in company of some of the most talented people in the industry.
I enjoyed A Highland Song quite a bit. The Sorcery! series is still probably my inkle favourite, but AHS is just lovely.
Great game that's worth it for the soundtrack alone - and you're helping a good cause! I seriously think this might be my favourite Inkle game, and that's saying something because they've put out nothing but bangers
Just listened to the intro & 1st episode. What an incredible idea for a book -- letting people write about whatever they think is important and trusting that it'll work out and not be duplicative! I'm so excited to get my copy and read all of the perspectives!
Love this game. One day I'm gonna make a list of my favourite Scotland-inspired games and this will be near the top
my little essay in this is called βI Would Like to Be Included in this Narrativeβ and itβs about casting as a technique in procedural storytelling to create granular, personalized moments
Not that long ago, advice and lessons on game narrative were fragmented and far between. Thankfully, books like this exist now. So much talent here. If you are interested in game narrative, check it out.
Psst btw everyone but A Highland Song is on sale right now with proceeds going to @gamesaid.bsky.social
Find out why this game hit number 28 in the Steam chart in Japan on launch. Seriously. Weβd love to know
Hello I wrote an essay for this :) I have also dipped in and read stuff by so many smart colleagues and I can tell you this is a BARGAIN and a TREASURE TROVE! (paperback is Β£14.99)
π THE GAME NARRATIVE KALEIDOSCOPE βοΈ is out NOW!
www.inklestudios.com/kaleidoscope
100+ essays on writing & narrative design, with articles from the writers of Baldur's Gate 3, Control, Call of Duty, Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, Sam and Max...
ALSO the Kaleidoscope Podcast with 2 full eps!
Whether you're an enthusiast player, aspiring writer, or experienced expert, this Kaleidoscope anthology is a must-have essay collection about game narrative.
Short reads, searing insights, a huge author roster that's simply to die for...and also a little one from me about letting players struggleπ
I had the great pleasure of talking to Jon and Sagar about game narratives and the challenges of crafting them.
If you enjoy this discussion, tune into more, and check out the accompanying book "The Game Narrative Kaleidoscope".
Launch day! I had such fun writing my piece on why βpoems make games betterβ but really only scratched the surface of the topic. What follows in this thread is both a preview and an addition to an example I raise briefly in my essay: π§΅
Also, look at this INSANE lineup. It's hard to not feel like one of those bands in a smaller font on a big music festival poster.
Not at all; the essay is a jumping off point but the conversation is wider and self contained
Do you like games? Do you like reading? Then you probably already love Inkle but you should still check this out either way.
FYI, for anyone (else) having trouble with the discount code, lulu.com is a little fussy in that the code is case-sensitive (use all caps) and when I registered and logged in, it didn't work for me on the initial checkout page, but worked on the shipping page.
well, we definitely recommend using the cheapest one if you do order - we've never have any problems and they're often much faster than they claim
It's a bit odd tbh; the whole point of Lulu is they ship from inside the target country
A copy of the book "The Game Narrative Kaleidoscope" on a wooden table with a little potted plant on the side.
Plus, look what just arrived in the mail! Perfect timing!
No, unless a miracle happens
These are so damn good. Seriously, highly recommend.
This project is fascinating to meβan excellent book and it began with an open call, not an exclusive curation mandate. A grab bag of tons of writers from different backgrounds who saw the call and responded with whatever insight was meaningful to them. And it works! I like the essay I wrote for it.
(Oh, btw, as a thankyou for reading the thread, the printers have a 10% discount code right now, BCORP10, which you can use at the checkout.)
What is this book? A wonderful little pile of secrets.
