I am rereading Anne of Avonlea for the first time in many years and I am having some feelings that sweet, elderly, white haired old maid Miss Lavendar is...45.

a cool thing about the US healthcare system is how you're expected to play elaborate games of telephone with insurance, providers, and pharmacies, and none of them ever tell you if they've done [thing you asked for] but then get annoyed when you call to see if [thing you asked for] has been done yet

Doctors say that vaccines are the best way to protect children against measles. A guy who eats dogs and snorts cocaine off toilet seats says they should just swim in untreated sewage water instead. For busy parents, it can be hard to know who to trust.

Totally fair! It was always rough for qualitative elements though. It's essentially impossible to de-identify a conversation about someone's life.

I get why this is bad, but I did hate doing the DMSP. It felt like busywork that made me cram social-behavioral research into a model meant for genetics and software to create a misaligned document that nobody would actually read.

There's a weird sense of relief to seeing these emails. It's harder to gaslight yourself about a gender-blind academic meritocracy when you know people in the upper echelons are talking like this.

Maybe, Roger, men are able to achieve "real focus" because they've dumped all the work of care downstream onto women to manage, and leveraged their own privilege to keep those women from demanding more support from men.

Question: But what would you like for us to take away from that? What would you like for the reader to know more intimately about you and how those two separate lives that you had together and the tough decisions you made and the risk that you had to take and even growing up with dyslexia and all that-like what do you want us to take from that and where you are today?
Answer: Well, the way we're doing, some of you may have seen some of my social media. I'm on the other side. I don't want to dream of regretting anymore. No could have, would have, should have. It's all out there. I just wanted to put it all out there. I'm not trying to impress you. I'm just trying to impress upon you. I'm like you. I'm no better than you. I'm a 960 SAT guy.
And I'm not trying to offend anyone, trying to act all there if you got 940, but literally a 960 SAT guy. I cannot-you've never seen me read a speech because I cannot read a speech. Maybe the wrong business to be in. My dyslexia-l haven't overcome dyslexia. I'm living with it. I was the guy in the back of the classroom and my head down just praying the teacher didn't call on me. I think I lost count of how many schools I had to go to.
And I'll never ever forget my mom's choice was never to label me. She just had to struggle with me. And I walked in-I'll never forget this. It was probably eighth or ninth grade. Walking home, got home early. My mom was always working. So I'm cooking, literally lived on Stuffer's lasagna, macaroni and cheese. I got finished two pots of macaroni and cheese and got bored and I went upstairs and there was a file cabinet open and it said "Gavin." In fact, she had a weird name,
"Gavinsky." That's like my nickname. And I open it up and it was all of these reports from the doctors and I never realized I was going after school three days a week. I didn't know what for.
And it was all around. It was the lisp and the reading-the b's and the r's were backwards, spelling which "w i"βthe whole-and I'm like,
"What is this?" And that's when I learned I had quote-unquote dyslexia. My mom was furious because she didn't want that to limit me. She didn't want that to be an excuse.
But it was freeing because I never understood why it was so easy for my sister and why I was struggling. But I also neverβand this is a long-winded pointβI also never knew how much she was struggling trying to raise me. And you talk
about that children's book. I wrote a children's book for kids with dyslexia because I was reading every night to my kids picture books and I realized that two of themβI have dyslexia-and I don't know what was worse for them or for me.
And I immediately thought of my mom and I never ever saw her struggles through that lens.
And so I wrote a book and by the way, this book-it's an ode to my mom. It's a composite of my mom. There's a letter on the back of the book to my mom. The school, the number of the school-the door is the day of her death. And it's really a composite love letter for all that she did to get me through this. And so I'm here because of that grit.
I'm here because of that resilience. And I imagine it's a story for many of you that we share. And I'm also here because of dyslexia. What a gift. What a gift it is to not have to read a script, but to be able to read a room.
Here's the full question and response.
