Never any money for healthcare, housing, infrastructure maintenance, school lunches, libraries, science research, or fucking *air controllers*.

Never any shortage of cash for militarized police and imperial wars.

What We Lose When We Gamify Reading At the dawn of 2026, I spent an irresponsible amount of time cataloguing what I did in 2025. There are so many ways to aggregate a personality these days: Letterboxd kept track of how many movies y…

"A book should make you stop mid-sentence and think, or stop to re-read the same paragraph because the words are so delicious. They should make you absorb each moment carefully, to get the complex picture that’s being presented to your brain."

Please, oh, please... i want to get back to this. 🫠

screencap from the above link:

I have found this problem fairly endemic to the romcomantasy (eh? eh?) subgenre to which McCallum’s debut belongs. Oh, I am so tired of reading book after book where nobody has ever done a single thing wrong, or, even if they have, it was all a terrible misunderstanding. I cannot bear these characters with personalities as smooth as Ken dolls, who run dear little retail shops in interchangeable Fantasylands and placeless middle Americas, unbothered by problems of inventory or human frailty. I am going to chew right through the bars of my enclosure, and go rampaging all around the countryside, if I am called upon to read one more book where a character’s big secret finally comes out, and the other character is like: β€œNo problem, babe, I know your heart, and I understand that, while you initially had a scheme to sabotage my dreams, you changed your mind over the course of our courtship. Due to the trust we have built together, I understand this perfectly without your having to explain it.”

Americans do not want this. They do not want another war in pursuit of regime change. They want relief from the affordability crisis. They want peace.

This isn’t a dig at the piece itself, which is excellent, but I don’t think the best way to replicate Heated Rivalry’s success is to just make β€œHeated Rivalry + insert sport.”

It’s to adapt more romance novels.

worth it, of course -- for the majority of it i paid humans for their livelihoods, which obviously i support in all cases.

but nevertheless expensive.

worth noting though that thus far i haven't found selfpub to be a hassle so much as really frickin expensive (and time-consuming) πŸ˜‚

everybody has their own tolerances tbh! and there are some extenuating behind-the-scenes here (that i probably shouldn't speculate about on main)

recently two authors have "mutually parted ways" from their pubs. & one other had their book threatened to be postponed (it wasn't in the end, thankfully)... just a concerning trend, i guess
