+++ NEW RELEASE +++
With Zettlr 4.2.1, we primarily focus on maintenance, but we also fix a few issues in relation to the recent Zotero 8.0 chaos that ensued.

I mean, Zettlr *mostly* attemts to target social scientists and humanities scholars, since they usually are stuck with either Word or Google Drive, but we're also surprised by this listing.
Maybe in the future Zettlr shows up on these lists, but there's still room.

Zettlr 4.2.0 is now live! Most acutely, possibly for some of you, it includes a bug fix that improves the interplay with the recent @zotero.org 8.0 update that overhauled their citation key mgmt.
The update will roll out over the coming hours.

It's not the end of the world; and exports will continue to work fine. But for good measure, there's now a fix in the codebase that will also report (via logging an error) if there was an item that is affected by this.
So to ensure your items are all still proper, please review the logs.
Some of you may have experienced issues with Zettlr's citation key autocomplete stopping to work after the 8.0.3 Zotero update.
While we don't know why it happened, we know what happened: Some citation items in the CSL JSON export are missing a citekey, and Zettlr just assumed tha they do.
What does it take to produce free and safe software for Windows? Quite a lot, it turns out. And the biggest enemy of small developers is Microsoft themselves. Read more in our third piece on "Selling Trust."

Absolutely. The wording of settings is always up for debate because especially in the en-US variety itβs essentially coming from the developers directly, and as such prone to difficult wordings β thatβs why we want feedback and suggestions from our users so direly!
No worries! The changelog was indeed a bit difficult to digest!
In any case, I hope that answered your questions thus far, let us know if anything else comes up!
Something like this is planned β alas not for opening files (if that takes considerable time, that's a bug), but for workspaces :D
While 1) is likely addressed now, 2) and 3) are both bugs and will both be fixed by this PR: github.com/Zettlr/Zettl...
Lastly, as I said, please open an issue so we can look into number 4)!
Nono, it really does sound like issues you've discovered. We're happy to address them!
This I'd have to double check. But this shouldn't induce such a big lag. Feel free to open an issue on GitHub so we don't forget it.

First, to this issue: As outlined in the CHANGELOG, there has been a setting change. What you probably want is to untick this one:
First of all, weβre sorry that youβre so disappointed by this release β Iβm currently en route, but once Iβm back at my computer Iβll have a look and will respond in kind! Please bear with me here!
Zettlr still has a wide text editor width, which makes it more difficult to read

A recent feature we just added is Lua filters! The assets manager now exposes the Lua filters for your exports with Pandoc for easy management. Coming with version 4.0.
By popular demand, we have added in Zettlr 4.0 the ability to instantaneously toggle between a raw Markdown source-code editing experience, and a WYSIWYG writing experience. This toggle will be available in the statusbar.
For Zettlr 4.0, we decided to give the Zettelkasten workflow a little glow-up. We have streamlined the settings, and fully embrace the ability to set link labels for any internal link.
For Zettlr 4.0, we have put some extra effort in rewriting the citation parser. Now, your citations will be properly highlighted and detected. This improves performance, user experience, and implements more citation features.
Oh, and the citation renderer now properly detects crossrefs!
One of the most-anticipated new features of the next release of Zettlr is a fully-rewritten table editor. No more data loss, easier insertion, and much more support for syntax highlighting, citations, math, and more!
Another new exciting feature of Zettlr 4.0 is a brand-new image and PDF viewer. Now you can cross-reference plots and research literature right within the app.
Nerd time.
Zettlr is an open-source writing tool that I've used for years. It's great.
Coolest feature: You can hyperlink your notes offline. Check it out.
